Lana Del Rey\u2019s<\/a> dad isn\u2019t like the other dads. He\u2019s a cool dad. He\u2019s a musically inclined dad. And he wants you to call him \u201cNepo Daddy.\u201d <\/p>\n Unfortunately, I am dead serious. In a new GQ profile<\/a>\u2014yes, Daddy Del Rey got his own GQ profile\u2014Del Rey and her 69-year-old father, Rob Grant, hopped on a yacht to sail up the Hudson River, talk incessantly about boats, and attempt to explain why the hell this man is launching a music career on the backs of his daughter and her industry connections<\/a>. (To be clear, we always support a late-bloomer, but side eye must be inserted when the famous are famous-ing.)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Grant is currently on the publicity train\u2014er, yacht\u2014to promote his upcoming album Lost at Sea, due out June 9th. GQ calls the effort a \u201cwholly intriguing, unexpected debut album, where transportative piano chords meet a trippy ambient soundscape.\u201d Lana\u2019s voice is featured on the songs \u201cHollywood Bowl\u201d and the title track \u201cLost at Sea,\u201d and the album was produced and shaped by Luke Howard and mega-producer Jack Antonoff, who also collaborated with Lana on her most recent album. In other words, Grant pulled out the big guns, as nepo daddies are wont to do.<\/p>\n Before his budding music career, Grant had been an advertising guy, a domain developer, and a \u201cbig boat guy\u201d who loves to sail the Gulf of Mexico. He\u2019d also been a huge supporter of his daughter\u2019s music career\u2014emotionally and, according to some reports<\/a>, financially (though the owner of the record label that first signed Lana in 2007 has said they never received<\/a> money directly from Grant). Interestingly, Lana now seems more than happy to lend a helping hand to her father, who has fully embraced the \u201cNepo Daddy\u201d title\u2026and turned it into merch<\/a>. He first saw the term in his Instagram comments, then immediately turned around and registered the domain name.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t \u201cNobody wants to give anyone any credit for doing anything,\u201d Grant adds. \u201cGod forbid that you actually have talent. People don\u2019t want to acknowledge that. They will find a way to undermine you and to really make you feel bad about yourself. So the nepo daddy thing, I love that. Hell, I\u2019ll sell you hats, T-shirts, canvas bags, you name it\u2026I\u2019m happy to be the first nepo daddy.\u201d<\/p>\n In promotional materials, Grant has described<\/a> himself as \u201can accidental recording artist\u201d who had never taken an instrument lesson in his life and cannot read sheet music. Although, he did try to become a country star when Lana was 11 years old by heading to Nashville with a song he\u2019d written titled \u201cBig Bubba.\u201d It didn\u2019t pan out. But it\u2019s all good! Because now the music simply comes to him, somehow!<\/p>\n \u201c\u2026when he sits down at a piano, notes flow from him. Melodies come unbidden,\u201d the album\u2019s press release reads<\/a>. \u201cHe can play for hours. Emotion overwhelms thought, and out pours composition after composition.\u201d It\u2019s giving Beethoven!<\/p>\n Grant hasn\u2019t yet announced if he\u2019ll be going on tour, but he did tell GQ he\u2019d be interested in opening for his daughter in a tropical shirt. \u201cIt\u2019s so cool to create music with my daughter,\u201d Grant added. \u201cBecause we really are very simpatico.\u201d<\/p>\n And probably also because she\u2019s got the good connects.
