Ye<\/a>, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, has spoken out for the first time about the controversy surrounding<\/a> his upcoming performances at the Wireless music festival<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Last week, it was confirmed<\/a> that the Grammy-winning rapper had been booked to perform at all three nights of Wireless at London\u2019s Finsbury Park in July.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the days that followed, this announcement has been heavily criticized due to Ye\u2019s history of antisemitic comments and actions in 2025, which included <\/span>praising Adolf Hitler<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>declaring himself to be a Nazi<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>selling a t-shirt on his web store emblazoned with a swastika<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>releasing a single titled \u201cHeil Hitler\u201d<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ye \u2014 who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 \u2014 <\/span>issued a public apology<\/span><\/a> for his behavior in a full-page magazine ad in January 2026 addressed \u201cto those I\u2019ve hurt\u201d with his antisemitic outbursts, which he explained had come during a months-long manic episode where he said he had \u201clost touch with reality\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Among the most vocal critics of the Wireless booking were numerous leading UK-based Jewish groups<\/a>, London mayor Sadiq Khan<\/a> and even UK prime minister Keir Starmer<\/a>, who said it was \u201cdeeply concerning that Kanye West has been booked to perform at Wireless despite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Tuesday morning, Ye issued a fresh statement, saying: \u201cI\u2019ve been following the conversation around Wireless and want to address it directly. My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person, to listen. I know words aren\u2019t enough \u2013 I\u2019ll have to show change through my actions. If you\u2019re open, I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He signed off the message \u201cwith love, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The organizers of Wireless have also defended the choice to keep Ye as their headliner for 2026, with managing director Melvin Benn saying<\/a>: \u201cForgiveness and giving people a second chance are becoming a lost virtue in this ever-increasing divisive world and I would ask people to reflect on their instant comments of disgust at the likelihood of him performing (as was mine) and offer some forgiveness and hope to him as I have decided to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHaving had a person in my life for the last 15 years who suffers from mental illness, I have witnessed many episodes of despicable behavior that I have had to forgive and move on from,\u201d Benn added.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf I wasn\u2019t before, I have become a person of forgiveness and hope in all aspects of my life, including work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Two months on from his public apology, the Touch The Sky musician released his 12th studio album Bully at the end of March.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bully reached number three in the U.K., and number two across the Atlantic, with lead single Father also peaking at number 27 here.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ye previously dismissed the suggestion<\/a> that his apology was a \u201cPR move\u201d intended to help him \u201crelease music\u201d and \u201coperate [his] businesses\u201d as he had before the backlash he sparked controversies 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After pointing out his music had continued to pull in huge streaming numbers despite backlash, Ye insisted to Vanity Fair<\/a>: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about reviving my commerciality. This is because these remorseful feelings were so heavy on my heart and weighing on my spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI owe a huge apology once again for everything that I said that hurt the Jewish and Black communities in particular. All of it went too far. I look at wreckage of my episode and realize that this isn\u2019t who I am.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAs a public figure, so many people follow and listen to my every word. It\u2019s important that they realize and understand what side of history that I want to stand on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
