The British government on Tuesday blocked Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, from entering the United Kingdom to headline the Wireless Festival in London this summer because of his history of antisemitism. As a result, the festival was canceled.<\/p>\n
The Home Office, which is the British government\u2019s department responsible for immigration, said the rapper\u2019s Electronic Travel Authorization had been denied because his presence at the music festival would not be conducive to the public good, BBC News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n The decision followed backlash<\/a> after Ye was announced as the headliner for the three-day festival in London\u2019s Finsbury Park this July. Jewish groups and politicians underscored Ye\u2019s repeated antisemitic remarks in recent years. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the festival\u2019s decision to have him headline \u201cdespite his previous antisemitic remarks and celebration of Nazism\u201d was \u201cdeeply concerning,\u201d the Sun<\/a> reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n Sponsors like Pepsi and Diageo, owner of the Johnnie Walker and Captain Morgan liquor brands, withdrew<\/a> their sponsorship from the concert series following Starmer\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n In the wake of the U.K. government\u2019s decision, Festival Republic, which organizes Wireless, said in a statement<\/a> on Tuesday, \u201cWireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders.\u201d Wireless is one of the U.K.\u2019s biggest music festivals, with about 150,000 concertgoers attending every year.<\/p>\n West made a last-minute statement<\/a> on Tuesday in hopes of avoiding a potential ban from the U.K., writing that he wanted to travel to London to bring \u201cunity, peace and love through my music.\u201d He expressed hope to meet with members of Britain\u2019s Jewish community to listen to their concerns.<\/p>\n \u201cI know words aren\u2019t enough,\u201d he said in the statement. \u201cI\u2019ll have to show change through my actions.\u201d<\/p>\n But the plea wasn\u2019t enough to quell concerns about his presence. The Board of Deputies of British Jews said Tuesday<\/a> that its members were open to meeting with the rapper \u201cas part of his journey of healing, but only after he agrees not to play the Wireless Festival this year.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt has been less than a year since Kanye West released a song entitled \u2018Heil Hitler,\u2019 the culmination of three years of appalling antisemitism,\u201d the statement from the board added.<\/p>\n
