In keeping with that, they then <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/watch-the-strokes-play-new-song-going-shopping-live-for-first-time-after-mailing-it-to-fans-on-cassette-3938817\">posted fans their new single \u2018Going Shopping<\/a>\u2018 on cassette leading fans to share bootlegs online before the band <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/watch-the-strokes-play-new-song-going-shopping-live-for-first-time-after-mailing-it-to-fans-on-cassette-3938817\">debuted the song live in San Francisco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, their first long-awaited new material since 2020\u2019s acclaimed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/the-strokes-the-new-abnormal-review-2640779\">\u2018The New Abnormal<\/a>\u2018 has hit streaming, in the form of the free and breezy \u2018Going Shopping\u2019 \u2013 a festival-ready guitar-meets-synth number adopting some laid-back classic Strokes anthemics as frontman <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/julian-casablancas\">Julian Casablancas<\/a> offers that he\u2019s \u201c<em>goin\u2019 out my mind, throwin\u2019 all my plans out the window<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Strokes - Going Shopping (Audio)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zgaLAliC3-8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also been announced that \u2018Reality Bites\u2019 will arrive on Friday June 26 via Cult Records\/RCA Records, and is available to pre-order <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thestrokes.lnk.to\/realityawaits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. The album was recorded in Costa Rica with producer Rick Rubin and finished around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes ahead of the band <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/coachella-2026-set-times-jack-white-surprise-last-minute-line-up-addition-watch-online-3938820\">playing Coachella this weekend<\/a> before headline appearances at Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Japan\u2019s Summer Sonic and more. Credit: Press<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Strokes being back in the saddle comes after <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/julian-casablancas-on-why-hes-kind-of-stepped-away-a-little-bit-from-very-cool-day-job-in-the-strokes-3803761\">Casablancas spoke in 2024 about \u201cstepping away\u201d from the band<\/a> to focus on his other band\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-voidz\">The Voidz<\/a>. However, he added that \u201cit\u2019s a very cool day job that I\u2019m honoured to have, so I don\u2019t feel negatively about it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it was wasting so much of my time that I couldn\u2019t do anything positive, then I would,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut I don\u2019t let it get to that point. At least I don\u2019t think so. I could be lying to myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He later admitted that the Strokes being together \u201csolely for financial reasons\u201d impacted their \u201ccreativity\u201d, and that they found a new impetus to stay together and return with new music. If I make money, that\u2019s fine, but I don\u2019t want to stay still. I\u2019m not looking for security or the status quo. If someone wants to keep creating, they have to be ready for change.
