David Schwimmer<\/a> on Monday applauded sponsors who backed out of the U.K.\u2019s Wireless Festival after Ye<\/a>, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, was announced as a headlining act in June. (Organizers have since canceled the fest<\/a> altogether following public<\/a> backlash<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The \u201cFriends\u201d actor, who is Jewish and spoke out against<\/a> Ye\u2019s antisemitic posting spree where he self-identified as a Nazi last year, addressed the rapper\u2019s attempt to return to the fest circuit as sponsors<\/a> pulled out<\/a> of the event in the lead-up to the U.K. government barring him<\/a> from traveling there and, subsequently, the fest\u2019s cancellation on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cUntil Ye demonstrates a commitment to building back trust \u2014 not only with the Jewish community, but with ALL the fans he left heartbroken and disappointed by his hateful rhetoric the last several years \u2014 he should not be granted a platform to perform,\u201d Schwimmer wrote in a lengthy essay<\/a> on Instagram.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The actor accused Ye of becoming \u201cone of the most recognizable hate-mongering bigots in the world\u201d who has used his celebrity status to promote hate against Jewish people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The actor\u2019s post arrives as Ye claims to want to put his days of praising Hitler on social media \u2014 or in song<\/a> \u2014 behind him this year as he promotes his latest album, \u201cBully,\u201d which has debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Ye\u2019s big comeback attempt has already seen him do massive shows in Mexico City and Inglewood while several other performances \u2014 including a still-on-the-books headlining act<\/a> at an Italian music festival \u2014 are set for the months ahead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Earlier this year, the rapper took out a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal<\/a> where he apologized for his antisemitism, noting that it took place amid a monthslong manic episode.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n He reportedly completed<\/a> his new album before the ad was published in the newspaper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Just two days after Ye dropped the album, Wireless announced that he\u2019d headline three nights of the festival, a move that didn\u2019t go unnoticed by major sponsors like Pepsi and PayPal, which backed out of the event thereafter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Schwimmer, in his essay on Instagram, pointed to Ye retracting a 2023 apology<\/a> for his antisemitism only to later \u201cdouble down on his virulent hatred of Jewish people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cAn apology letter is just that: Words on paper. An advertisement, generating publicity before a concert tour. It does not erase years of abuse,\u201d the actor wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI believe in forgiveness, but it takes much more than this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Ye, before Wireless called off its fest on Tuesday, said he looked to perform at the event to show \u201cchange\u201d and bring \u201cunity, peace, and love through my music.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK in person, to listen,\u201d he told Complex<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI know words aren\u2019t enough.
