The first thing I ever &#8216;made&#8217; was a music video, and just pulling that first thread has led me to where I am now, actually being able to get by off of my freelance filmmaking and editing work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Filmmaking is very complex and daunting, but finding a practice making music videos with the resources immediately available to me and having pride in my work has helped me find my voice and direction as a visual creative more than just about anything else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fellow local filmmaker<strong> <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"http:\/\/ssssssssssssssssssssjd.com\" data-component=\"Link\"><strong>Stephanie Jane Day<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>shares Nikola&#8217;s views, saying &#8220;music videos are often the place where instinct kind of melds into craft&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s where I&#8217;ve learned how to build something ambitious within real constraints,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That kind of compressed, high-stakes experimentation is invaluable because it gives emerging creatives the chance to test ideas, make bold aesthetic decisions, collaborate across disciplines and discover their voice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I started making music videos it was always ideas first, execution second. I think the earlier projects were far more ambitious than things I dare to make these days purely because I didn&#8217;t know or accept limitations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That collaborative environment also encourages artists to step beyond their primary roles, using music videos as a space for them to experiment with new creative mediums.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Funnily enough I&#8217;ve seen many vocalists jump into directing from music too (I was one of them); there&#8217;s something about the pursuit of storytelling that draws writers towards directing music videos,&#8221; Chris Elder said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Perhaps it&#8217;s akin to how novels often become movies \u2014 it&#8217;s another opportunity for a story to find a broader audience.
