Channel 4 <\/a>has revealed an update on the future of a controversial reality series following just one series. The social experiment show Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing<\/a> is reportedly being commissioned for a second series, along with a celebrity spin-off.<\/p>\n

Hosted by Jonathan Ross, the Channel 4<\/a> programme saw eight strangers with entirely opposing opinions, beliefs, lifestyles and bad habits handcuffed together around the clock for several weeks in the ultimate test of endurance.<\/p>\n

They were required to work together through every challenge and navigate eating, dressing and even sleeping just inches apart. The first series line-up featured some other unlikely pairings, including a plus-size model with a gym-obsessed alpha male and a self-made millionaire with a cleaner, reports the Mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, adult content creator Rob and conservative housewife Charlie were crowned as winners. The show sparked widespread debate when it launched last month \u2014 particularly owing to its substantial \u00a3100,000 cash prize.<\/p>\n

Despite the controversy surrounding it, Channel 4 producers are reportedly eager for the show to return for another series, as well as bringing in some well-known faces for a spin-off version.<\/p>\n

“There isn’t just an appetite for a second series of the ‘civilian’ show, there’s also the desire to make a celebrity version,” a TV insider told The Sun.<\/p>\n

They went on: “That’s because there are plenty of stars out there who have very contrasting views with other stars and the prospect of them being stuck with one another is just delicious.<\/p>\n

“Producers know it will make for great telly, though how long they will actually last being handcuffed remains to be seen.”<\/p>\n

Manchester Evening News has reached out to Channel 4 for comment.<\/p>\n

First unveiled in May last year, the programme marked Jonathan’s comeback to Channel 4 after launching his career with the broadcaster presenting The Last Resort back in 1987.<\/p>\n

At the time, he said: “I believe this experiment will go a small way to healing a fractured Britain; after all, to know is to love. I’m rooting for our couples to go the distance and not let our differences overpower us.”<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, viewers have wasted no time sharing their reactions online. One Reddit user claimed it was TV “that’s hit rock bottom”, while another viewer described it as “car crash TV at its finest”.<\/p>\n

However, somebody else countered: “Great bit of drama due to the brilliant casting of the people who signed up for it.”<\/p>\n

Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing is available to watch on catch-up on Channel 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
