{"id":2364110,"date":"2026-04-08T14:24:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T14:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2364110"},"modified":"2026-04-08T14:24:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T14:24:16","slug":"tarheel-tales-animated-by-act-for-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/tarheel-tales-animated-by-act-for-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Tarheel Tales\u2019 animated by ACT! for Youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>ACT! for Youth delivers a treat this weekend with performances of \u201cTarheel Tales,\u201d a collection of Appalachian folk stories originally collected by Richard Chase and published in \u201cThe Jack Tales\u201d and \u201cGrandfather Tales.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>The shows, all held at the Edna Boykin Cultural Center, will be Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m. (a relaxed rules performance) and 2 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>Five separate tales are presented by the same cast with some audience participation included. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>\u201cJack and the Northwest Wind\u201d finds Jack seeking the source of the wind and making his fortune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span> \u201cThe Big Toe\u201d is a humorous ghost story like \u201cjump tales\u201d told around a campfire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>\u201cOld Dry Frye\u201d chronicles the misadventures of a dead body that finds its way around the community with the audience joining in the refrain, \u201cEverybody Knows Old Dry Frye.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>Six volunteers from the audience are involved during \u201cWicked John and the Devil,\u201d where John successfully outsmarts the devil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>\u201cJack and the Robbers\u201d is a popular closing story featuring a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster that help Jack in his journey to discover a fortune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>The cast making all these tales from the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina come to life are Milo Boyd, Tirzah Davis, Hailey Frison, Kaitlyn Henderson, Caroline McCauley, Annika McLean, Tyler Norris, Jakayla Renfrow and Benjamin Winders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>\u201cIt\u2019s very much a mountain vibe, Appalachia sort of theater troupe, storytelling tradition,\u201d said Thomas Mauney, Wilson Arts\u2019 theater arts coordinator and \u201cTarheel Tales\u201d director. \u201cThe interesting thing for the actors is that they have to create four or five distinct different characters, and each story is eight to 10 minutes long. The stories are back to back, so they are trying to manifest something that is different enough for the audience to recognize, \u2018Oh, this IS a different character,\u2019 even though they are not making costume changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>Tickets for \u201cTarheel Tales\u201d be purchased online at wilsonarts.com\/afytickets, by calling Wilson Arts at 252-291-4329 or at the door. Adult tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Senior and student tickets are $10 at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span><strong style=\"font-weight:bold\">\u2018SIX: TEEN EDITION\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-wisiwig-body1=\"true\" class=\"txtStyle_body1 mb_$body1\"><span>Running in repertory with \u201cTarheel Tales\u201d is a second ACT! for Youth production. \u201cSix: Teen Edition\u201d is a tale of Henry VIII\u2019s six wives served up with a pop concert energy.
