Release day is exciting, yes, but it is also the point at which the work no longer belongs only to her. \u201cIt feels like you\u2019re breathing out all the work. And then finally, it\u2019s the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- placeholder(#1) --><\/p>\n<p>Blue is treating the release of <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">RNB<\/span> as a reset. At 26, she has already spent eight years making music professionally, after first breaking through with the covers she posted as a teenager.<\/p>\n<p>In that time, she has built both her catalog and her name in real time. She also learned the business by moving through it, switching labels and even teams as she figured out what fit and what did not. Songs like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cTxkYFv036A\">\u201cKesho\u201d<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-Yv9MRa28dY&amp;list=RD-Yv9MRa28dY&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201cI Choose You\u201d<\/a> with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/for-kenyas-bien-music-after-sauti-sol-is-about-starting-again\/229616\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Bien<\/span><\/a> kept that momentum going, while projects like Colours, Grateful, and 24 helped map her growth. In the last year alone, she has released <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8WeVMVYYOfI\">\u00a0\u201cMapenzi\u201d<\/a> with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/toxic-lyrikali-the-nairobi-rapper-blending-trap-dancehall-and-hood-life\/1413928\"><span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Toxic Lyrikali<\/span><\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rdysNyQzUnM\">\u201cNi Wewe,\u201d<\/a> a certified hit that pulled in 1.5 million views on YouTube in under one month. So by the time RNB arrived in April, Blue was building on years of work and a catalog that had already begun to speak for itself.<\/p>\n<p>Still, she says this album feels different from everything that came before it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new album represents a new beginning,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve finally stopped being so scared to say what\u2019s on my mind. It\u2019s the real, vulnerable me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continues: \u201cI feel with this album, it\u2019s me bare and vulnerable and just pouring my whole soul. Getting older and growing into herself helped. But more than anything, she says, she learned to work through the fear that had been preventing her from showing up fully as herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s just doing it afraid, because I feel like there wasn\u2019t going to be a time where [the fear] would be completely gone,\u201d she says. What also changed was how she wanted to be seen. For a long time, Blue says that she leaned into appearing harmless and non-threatening. She wanted people to read her as peaceful, shy, and not in competition with anyone. It was a defense mechanism\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then it reached a point where I was like, \u2018okay, so I\u2019m shy and meek, and I\u2019m still getting what I\u2019m trying to avoid!\u2019 So that\u2019s when I realized there\u2019s absolutely no chance,\u201d she says. \u201cThe humbling and the opinions were still happening. So I felt like I\u2019m sacrificing myself for absolutely nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That realization changed the way she moved. She stopped trying to manage how people would read her and started showing up more fully in her work. She went back to her parents\u2019 place, set up in her childhood bedroom, and told herself, \u201cI\u2019m coming out of here with music.\u201d The record moves between love, doubt, vulnerability, and self-possession. One of its warmest moments is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OXKNU6yOjqY&amp;list=RDOXKNU6yOjqY&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201cMimi Na Wewe,\u201d<\/a> her duet with fellow Kenyan singer <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Nikita Kering<\/span>, which is quickly grabbing attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve never really written from personal experience until now. I used to write more from imagination, and always tried to, I don\u2019t know, escape me,\u201d she says. \u201cI think it\u2019s a more daring side of me. I think it\u2019s me not calculating the words anymore. I feel like I\u2019ve been more bold with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She points to \u201cNine to Five,\u201d<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6ahCQQADblQ&amp;list=RD6ahCQQADblQ&amp;start_radio=1\"> her latest single from the album<\/a>, as one example. In it, Blue pushes back against smallness and against the pressure to make herself more palatable. The song captures the tension between playing polite and feeling that she is meant for more. In the chorus, she sings:<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">I\u2019m too pretty for a nine-to-five\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">Too loud for a quiet life\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">Biting my tongue just to stay polite\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">Tonight I\u2019m saying just what I like\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">I\u2019m too pretty for a nine-to-five\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">Too fire just to stay on ice\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">Tired of pretending everything\u2019s alright\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"italic m-italic\" data-lab-italic=\"italic\">Yes I\u2019ll be, I\u2019ll be alright<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA song like that is really, it\u2019s giving me chills when I listen to it,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I\u2019m having to ask people over and over, \u2018Are you sure this is okay? The title points you there immediately.
