Stephen Colbert<\/a> is lending his voice to the resistance in Hulu\u2019s \u201cThe Testaments<\/a>\u201d before he bids farewell to \u201cThe Late Show<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Colbert made a surprise voice cameo in the new series, a sequel to \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/a>\u201d based on the follow-up novel by Margaret Atwood that follows a new generation of women in the totalitarian society of Gilead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the show\u2019s first episode, which premiered Wednesday, Colbert serves as a broadcaster for the resistance network Radio Free Boston, where he reminds listeners, \u201cDon\u2019t let the bastards grind you down,\u201d a rallying cry ripped from the series\u2019 predecessor in a show that premiered during Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s first administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bruce Miller \u2014 creator and showrunner of the new Hulu series and its predecessor \u2014 told TV Insider<\/a> that Colbert, whose late night TV staple was canceled by CBS in a move that many critics have perceived as political in nature, was \u201ca good person to be the voice of free speech in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe very kindly did that for us, and I couldn\u2019t think of anybody more appropriate to have on Radio Free Boston as the announcer,\u201d said Miller in a separate interview<\/a> with Entertainment Weekly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Miller told EW that Colbert\u2019s resistance to the president made him an \u201cobvious choice\u201d for the part, noting that he called the host around the time CBS announced that it would take the harsh Trump critic\u2019s show off the air.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYou know, I knew that he\u2019d be available, and he probably needed work,\u201d joked Miller of Colbert, who is prepping for his final episode<\/a>, set for May 21.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Colbert\u2019s part in \u201cThe Testaments\u201d adds to a growing list of new gigs revealed in recent months, including a guest spot<\/a> on CBS\u2019s police procedural dramedy \u201cElsbeth,\u201d where he played a fictional late night host.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He confirmed late last month that he was co-writing<\/a> a film for the \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d franchise. He also provided his voice<\/a> for the Digital Dean of Students in \u201cStar Trek: Starfleet Academy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With his most recent gig in \u201cThe Testaments,\u201d Colbert follows Oprah Winfrey, who portrayed a broadcaster in \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
