During that time, they spoke to doctors about \u201cthe risks and implications\u201d of getting a tracheostomy, defined as a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the neck into the trachea to help airway access and ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn short I\u2019m not going ahead with the tracheostomy,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick explained that doctors told him that if he got the procedure, it would take between six and 12 months for him to go home from the hospital because of \u201clack of staffing resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image hospital,\u201d he continued. \u201cEveryone has tried so hard, but there just isn\u2019t the staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patrick also thanked everyone who donated to his GoFundMe,\u00a0which was created to help with hospital bills, including the cost of the tracheostomy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though I didn\u2019t go ahead with the tracheostomy- it will still go towards providing me with specialist care as I enter the final stages of life,\u201d he shared in his post. \u201cI\u2019m still overwhelmed by all your generosity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The GoFundMe has raised over \u00a3110,505\u00a0(about $129,184)
