OF COURSE, MANY PEOPLE OUT HERE PARTYING, CELEBRATING, BUT WE’RE NOT SURE HOW MANY MORE YEARS WE HAVE LEFT HERE AT TRUMAN SPORTS COMPLEX. THE LEASE, OF COURSE, IT RUNS OUT AFTER THE 2021 SEASON. NOW, EARLIER TODAY, CEO OF THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS, JOHN SHERMAN, HE ADDRESSED THE MEDIA AND HE WAS ASKED ABOUT SOME OF THE DECISIONS HE’S MAKING AND WHERE THE ROYALS ARE GOING TO BE IN FIVE YEARS. IT’S ALWAYS DANGEROUS TO SET A DEADLINE. BUT I WOULD TELL YOU, I THINK THE PACE IS PICKING UP AND CONSISTENT WITH WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING. YOU KNOW, I EXPECT WE’LL BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. AND WE HAVE A GREAT SENSE OF URGENCY ABOUT THAT. YEAH, WE TALKED WE’VE HEARD THAT A LOT SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. OF COURSE, ONE OF THE SITES THAT HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT IS WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK DOWN BY UNION STATION, ABOUT AS A POSSIBLE SITE WHERE THE KANSAS CITY ROYALS COULD BUILD THEIR BRAND NEW BALLPARK. AND THAT IS WHERE WE FIND KMBC9 ANDY ALCOCK TONIGHT. AND WE HAVE A LOT OF POSSIBILITIES, A LOT OF TALKS. WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT. WHAT DID YOU HEAR? YEAH. BRIAN LINN, THIS IS DEFINITELY ONE POSSIBILITY. AS LYNN MENTIONED, WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK IS JUST EAST OF UNION STATION AND THE STREETCAR LINE. IT’S ALSO JUST NORTH OF CROWN CENTER. EARLIER TODAY, WE WENT TO A BUSINESS IN CROWN CENTER, WHICH COULD BE IMPACTED BY NEW BALLPARK HERE, THE BEST OF KANSAS CITY SHOP HAS BEEN AT ITS LOCATION IN CROWN CENTER FOR 40 YEARS. THE SHOP FEATURES PLENTY OF ROYALS GEAR, ALONG WITH OTHER ITEMS, ALL FOCUSED ON KANSAS CITY ROYALS OWNER JOHN SHERMAN HAS PREVIOUSLY EXPRESSED HIS INTEREST IN AN ENTERTAINMENT CENTER AS PART OF A NEW BALLPARK. WE ASKED CROWN CENTER PROPERTY MANAGERS ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF THEIR FACILITY BEING RENOVATED AS PART OF A ROYALS BALLPARK DEAL. THEY DECLINED COMMENT. THE BEST OF KANSAS CITY OWNER MONICA ALEXANDER TOLD US SHE HAS NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM HER LANDLORDS ABOUT ANY POSSIBLE CHANGES. I’VE BEEN HERE SINCE 1986 AND WE HAVE SURVIVED A LOT OF THINGS FROM 911 TO RECESSIONS TO COVID, AND WE’RE STILL HERE. WE’LL ADAPT, WE’LL FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO AT THAT POINT IN TIME. BUT I THINK IT’S A GREAT THING FOR THE CITY. AND I THINK PEOPLE THAT ARE DOWN HERE ON THE REGULAR UNDERSTAND THAT. AND IF THIS SITE IS CHOSEN, WE HAVE CONFIRMED KANSAS CITY’S PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD WOULD HAVE TO APPROVE ANY CHANGES TO THIS PROPERTY.
