Drew Barrymore<\/a> in Cape Fear<\/em>? Juliette Lewis<\/a> in Riding in Cars With Boys<\/em>? It could\u2019ve happened!<\/p>\n The actresses, who shared the screen in Barrymore\u2019s 2009 directorial debut Whip It<\/em><\/a>, reflected on the movie roles that they lost to one another over the years on Thursday\u2019s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n The conversation arose during the talk show\u2019s Behind the Scenes segment, which sees Barrymore ask guests to share fond memories from selected entries in their filmography. When Barrymore brought up Lewis\u2019 performance in 1993\u2019s What\u2019s Eating Gilbert Grape<\/em>, the host noted that she\u2019d similarly read the script and was amazed by how Lewis\u2019 performance anchored the film.<\/p>\n Turning to the audience, Lewis explained, \u201cWe came up in the same time, so I would see scripts or lose parts to Drew. Remember Boys [on the Side]?<\/em> Yes! I lost to Drew Barrymore.\u201d<\/p>\n Barrymore and Lewis on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ Lewis\u2019 recollection of her audition, however, suggests that the film was actually Penny Marshall<\/a>\u2019s Riding in Cars With Boys<\/em>, not Boys on the Side<\/em>. Regardless, Barrymore was still shocked by the news before revealing she, too, had lost a role to Lewis.<\/p>\n \u201cOh my God!\u201d she exclaimed.\u00a0\u201cOkay, I wasn’t gonna bring it up, but I auditioned for Cape Fear<\/em>. And it was on a Sunday morning with the casting director’s assistant, which means you have no chance.\u201d<\/p>\n It didn\u2019t go over well. \u201cI had to do the scene where he sticks the finger in your mouth and I had to put my own finger in my mouth,\u201d Barrymore explained, referring to a moment in Martin Scorsese\u2019s 1991 horror film where Robert De Niro\u2019s character sticks his thumb into a young Lewis\u2019 mouth. \u201cI was doing his part and my part and I was like, \u2018This isn’t gonna go well.\u2019 And I knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n Lewis was later nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Danielle Bowden, the teen daughter of defense attorney Samuel Bowden (Nick Nolte), in the film.<\/p>\n ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ Barrymore was also amazed to learn that Lewis had also auditioned for Riding in Cars With Boys<\/em> at Marshall\u2019s house.\u00a0\u201cTheir mistake!\u201d the host said of not hiring Lewis for the job. The fellow actress brushed off the compliment, replying, \u201cOh, please.\u201d<\/p>\n She did acknowledge, however, that she was sad at the time to have not landed the role \u201cbecause that was a really juicy part.\u201d<\/p>\n The 2001 film, which was based on Beverly Donofrio\u2019s autobiography of the same name, tells her story as a young mother navigating a complicated marriage and relationship to her son.
