When Barrymore brought up Lewis\u2019 performance in 1993\u2019s <em>What\u2019s Eating Gilbert Grape<\/em>, the host noted that she\u2019d similarly read the script and was amazed by how Lewis\u2019 performance anchored the film.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the audience, Lewis explained, \u201cWe came up in the same time, so I would see scripts or lose parts to Drew. Remember <em>Boys [on the Side]?<\/em> Yes! Regardless, Barrymore was still shocked by the news before revealing she, too, had lost a role to Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my God!\u201d she exclaimed.\u00a0\u201cOkay, I wasn&#8217;t gonna bring it up, but I auditioned for <em>Cape Fear<\/em>. The fellow actress brushed off the compliment, replying, \u201cOh, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did acknowledge, however, that she was sad at the time to have not landed the role \u201cbecause that was a really juicy part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2001 film, which was based on Beverly Donofrio\u2019s autobiography of the same name, tells her story as a young mother navigating a complicated marriage and relationship to her son. You have that sparkle. You have that thing. He wrote this one and it was around for a few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewis described the Oliver Stone-directed film as a \u201creally incredible\u201d experience, noting that it allowed her the space to dabble in some \u201creally primal energies\u201d that women weren\u2019t typically allowed to express onscreen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially at that time\u00a0\u2014 what was it, \u201994, \u201995?\u00a0\u2014\u00a0you didn\u2019t have women doing a lot of fight sequences,\u201d she said. \u201cYou [Barrymore] did it later with <em>Charlie\u2019s Angels <\/em>where you wanted really exciting action sequences. We didn\u2019t have it back then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cIt was very volatile, the nature of the character, and Oliver, even though he&#8217;s a tough director, he never said no to a single idea I came up with. He really spoiled me, because he allowed me to try all these different ideas.
