Known collectively as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spectatormusic.com\/\">Spectator<\/a>, the\u00a0St. Louis act\u00a0raised eyebrows and tapped feet with 2019\u2019s\u00a0<em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectatorstl.bandcamp.com\/album\/charlie-baby\">Charlie, Baby<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>a record that served as an excellent follow-up to their melodic 2015 release\u00a0<em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectatorstl.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-last-exchange\">The Last Exchange<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and their<em>\u00a0<\/em>2012 debut EP\u00a0<em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectatorstl.bandcamp.com\/album\/in-the-brick\">In the Brick<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But then, in an all-too-common refrain for artists active in the year 2020, the pandemic derailed things. As such, it\u2019s been some time since fans were graced with new music from Spectator\u2014but that all changed this week with\u00a0<em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectatorstl.bandcamp.com\/album\/venus-jupiter\">Venus + Jupiter<\/a><\/em>, a double-sided single released on April 3. We had a baby at the time, and then Meg was pregnant, so things got put on hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Albert\u00a0and\u00a0Rooney were both already involved in the city\u2019s music scene when they met and formed Spectator in 2006. Both musicians were\u00a0performing in various capacities around town\u00a0when\u00a0their paths crossed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just started messing around,\u201d\u00a0Albert says.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019d pick up her guitar and I\u2019d start playing, and quickly, we realized that we were putting out a \u2018sound.\u2019 We would piece together ideas and melodies and turn them into songs. Then, we started playing with a couple of musicians we knew. I remember one time we were playing a new song, and somebody said we had that \u2018Megan and Jeff sound.\u2019 It grew out from that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The duo\u2019s new tracks saw a similar creative process. Despite the challenges of lockdown and raising children,\u00a0Rooney and Albert were still playing music and thinking through new material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were home messing around with the guitar,\u201d Albert says. \u201cI\u2019d be playing the melody, and we\u2019d be singing and coming up with words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the pandemic ended,\u00a0Albert\u00a0and Rooney relished the opportunity to\u00a0seriously\u00a0focus on music\u00a0again.\u00a0But even then, they knew that they needed some limits.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spectator - Venus (Official video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KZbI4Hw2LWI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to get back in the studio, but we knew we didn\u2019t have the bandwidth to get in there and try to do a whole record, even though we\u2019ve got a whole record\u2019s worth of songs,\u201d\u00a0Albert says.\u00a0\u201cWe thought these two songs felt like a good pairing, so we focused on those first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With new\u00a0songs selected, Spectator turned to their friend Kevin Bachmann of Magic City to produce the tracks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with Kevin is awesome. We got introduced to him for our last record, and from the first time we met him, it was clear we all thought in a similar way,\u201d Rooney says.\u00a0\u201cI think \u2018collaboration\u2019 is the key word for us and working with Kevin. We feel very free and liberated recording with him. I will give him tons of references for the sound we want, and he\u2019ll totally listen, take that in, and then help us craft what we\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining them on the project\u00a0as well is\u00a0local drummer Kevin Bowers,\u00a0perhaps best known for his work with\u00a0Nova\u00a0and\u00a0The Pernikoff Brothers,\u00a0and Sam Golden of Fiddlin\u2019 Sam and the Bolo Band on strings.<\/p>\n<p><em>Venus + Jupiter<\/em>\u00a0finds Spectator picking up where they left off. Sonically, they draw influence from the dreampop, folk, soul, indie, and Brazilian bossa nova sounds they love. Their maturation finds them combining their expansive melodies with the hazy sensibilities of Mazzy Star, the catchiness of Tennis, and the twang of Jeff Tweedy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a result, both \u201cVenus,\u201d sung by Albert and\u00a0powered in part by\u00a0an undulating piano melody, and<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201cJupiter,\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em>with vocals by Rooney,<em>\u00a0<\/em>are both textured and expansive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVenus\u201d has the vibe of a chill-out-at-home-on-a-weekend-morning song. Sweeping atmospherics and pointed percussion wrap Albert\u2019s vocals like a warm blanket.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KZbI4Hw2LWI\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A video<\/a>\u00a0for this gentle and calming number was also released this week, directed by local filmmaker\u00a0Brian McClelland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJupiter,\u201d a more pensive and wistful tune, is breezy and airy. Rooney\u2019s vocals playfully dance with the melody, giving it a beautiful emotional depth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While no new album is imminent, Spectator\u00a0has\u00a0plans\u00a0to be more active\u00a0in the near future,\u00a0with smaller projects being released as they come along.\u00a0That includes some exciting plans on the horizon for fans, teases Rooney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur next project is a four-song EP,\u201d Rooney says. \u201cWe have four songs ready.
