LONDON (AP) \u2014 With links to Celine Dion<\/a> and Olivia Newton-John<\/a>, Delta Goodrem is one of the best-connected contestants at this year\u2019s Eurovision Song Contest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also one of the most successful participants, as the award-winning Australian singer-songwriter has sold over nine million albums and topped charts in eight countries.<\/p>\n

Goodrem is representing her home country in the world\u2019s largest live music event,<\/a> which takes place this year in Vienna. Even though it\u2019s way outside of Europe, Australia has been invited to compete since 2015.<\/p>\n

In the 1990s Goodrem, who was a former star of Australian soap \u201cNeighbours,\u201d wrote a track called \u201cEyes on Me\u201d for Dion<\/a>, who won Eurovision representing Switzerland in 1988.<\/p>\n

She was also mentored by the late Newton-John, another global superstar who took part in the song contest on behalf of the United Kingdom in 1974, although not as successfully.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up, Olivia Newton-John and Celine Dion were two of my greatest loves in music,” she said. \u201cI don\u2019t think I would be the musician I am today without my influence from the two of them. And they have both been a part of that stage from different countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goodrem also has a link to the entry representing the tiny country of San Marino. Boy George, who appears on SENHIT’s entry \u201cSuperstar,\u201d used to be a judge and rival alongside Goodrem on Australia’s hit TV talent show \u201cThe Voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got my eyes on him. I\u2019m watching him,\u201d Goodrem joked. \u201cI was so excited and couldn\u2019t stop laughing … it\u2019s so playful that Boy George was like, \u2018I\u2019m coming to Eurovision!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Associated Press spoke to Goodrem in London about competing with her power ballad \u201cEclipse\u201d in the Eurovision Song Contest.<\/p>\n

This conversation has been edited for clarity and brevity.<\/p>\n

AP: When was the first time you ever heard about Eurovision?<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: It\u2019s been a bit omnipresent where you sort of heard it in the air. And I guess obviously Australia\u2019s been in for 11 years. So we became a lot more actively like Team Australia. But growing up, you always were, you know, enamored with this incredible iconic stage and it\u2019d always find its way to us.<\/p>\n

AP: I feel like you\u2019ve been representing Australia your whole life.<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: I feel that as well and I\u2019ve always been very patriotic and very true to the love I have for Australia and it feels like they\u2019re all celebrating, we\u2019re all sort of there together on this journey.<\/p>\n

AP: How competitive are you?<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: Oh you know, I\u2019m definitely here to give it my absolute all, yes.<\/p>\n

AP: Did you watch last year?<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: So (last year) I was doing my couple of shows here (in London) and I had sort of got to experience the energy of Eurovision on the ground and I just thought it was palpable, it was incredible and I was watching all the programs and it was really exciting and somebody had asked me, \u2018would you do Eurovision?\u2019 And I said, \u2018I\u2019m always open\u2019 \u2026 You never know where your path\u2019s leading, just if it feels right.<\/p>\n

AP: While Eurovision tries to keep out politics, it\u2019s always crept in. What do you think about the boycott this year?<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: I really am a true believer that throughout my career, coming to my show, I\u2019m about unifying \u2014 music for me is a moment where we\u2019re all singing the same song. And I believe in that, and I have my whole life, that it\u2019s very healing, music has a real power.<\/p>\n

So I sort of focus on the power of music being a unifying space and a place that can wrap around people\u2019s lives and their soundtrack and that\u2019s where it sits for me.<\/p>\n

AP: What did you think about the news that they\u2019re doing Eurovision in Asia?<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: The more music the better. I think that\u2019s so exciting. That means I get to immerse myself in the music in September for Eurovision Asia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

AP: I need to ask you about staging. I see the video for this involves a lot of sand.<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: Yes, you\u2019re thinking I should bring Australian sand, you know, that\u2019s very patriotic. I start a little beach on stage, look up at the moon for \u201cEclipse.\u201d I definitely am really excited to bring it to life.<\/p>\n

AP: If you win, can Eurovision go to Australia?<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: Sure. Yeah, yeah!<\/p>\n

AP: Is it more likely that it\u2019d be a co-host?<\/h2>\n

GOODREM: Look, I don\u2019t know those logistics yet but I\u2019m open to the conversation \u2026 If you would like to vote for me then I\u2019m happy to talk about if we could like have it here or if, you know, I\u2019m happy to do a deal.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
