Melissa Etheridge has been making an impression on the national music scene for nearly 40 years; her debut album dropped in 1988. Fifteen Grammy nominations \u2014<\/strong> including two wins \u2014<\/strong> and an Academy Award later, she’s still creating new music and connecting with audiences.<\/p>\n\n

In support of her latest album, \u201cRise,\u201d<\/a> Etheridge will make a stop on Wednesay, April 15, at the Chevalier Theatre in Medford<\/a> as part as her current tour.\u00a0Limited tickets are available by visiting https:\/\/www.eventticketscenter.com\/<\/a> and searching “Melissa Etheridge.”<\/p>\n

In a phone conversation with Wicked Local, Etheridge, who attended Berklee College of Music<\/a>, said she’s looking forward to being back in Greater Boston.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople in Massachusetts know how to rock and I\u2019m here for it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Passionate and personal storytelling through song<\/h2>\n

Known for her smoky and raspy vocals, Etheridge was embraced in the early 1990s with her songs, \u201cCome to my Window,\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m the Only One.\u201d From there it was an avalanche of accolades, nominations, awards and life in the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n

The music was always there, something that had been a constant in her life since childhood when she picked up her first guitar.<\/p>\n

Her first studio album of new material, \u201cRise,\u201d was released earlier this year. The 11-track album features the fiery lead single \u201cMatches\u201d; a duet with Chris Stapleton on \u201cThe Other Side of Blue\u201d; the deeply personal \u201cCall You\u201d; and the uplifting opener \u201cBein\u2019 Alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI hadn\u2019t really written or created songs, and I sat and analyzed life and put these thoughts down,\u201d said Etheridge, who turns 65 next month. \u201cI sort of witnessed the world and I wanted to write songs to inspire people and inspire myself. I wanted people to know it can be alright.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Many of her songs are about life, through her filter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s life, as it happened to me and for me, and I realize everyone\u2019s life is full of loss, trying to understand things about yourself,\u201d said Etheridge, who has been married to actress Linda Wallem since 2014.\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s what I wanted to reflect. I write songs for people who are getting to know themselves and who want to put some music on in their car when they\u2019re alone and be inspired and feel like they\u2019re not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Keeping the personal connection<\/h2>\n

A mother of four \u2014<\/strong> she lost a son to opioid addiction in 2020, something she has talked about publicly \u2014<\/strong> Etheridge does not consider creating new material, touring and performing to be “work.”<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel so blessed to be able to sing and play music as a career; one that has been so rewarding,” she said. \u201cI love to do it. I keep it fresh by creating new music and am totally jazzed to be out here working the new album.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Being on the road gives Etheridge a sense of \u201croutine\u201d that she said simplifies her life for half a year.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy life gets really small \u2014<\/strong> you do a show, you get on the bus and head back to the hotel, eat, then get ready and go to the soundcheck, then have dinner, then the show,” she said. “I like that.\u00a0The other half of the year I\u2019m kicking back with my feet up watching football.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Live performances are about the energy, Etheridge said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to share the new music with people and love seeing the response to the brand new songs,” she said. “And I love to sing the old songs that touch people\u2019s memories. I like that connection with people.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for what\u2019s ahead, Etheridge said there’s usually a routine of going out on the road and then coming home and unwinding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure right now what\u2019s ahead,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m kind of just waiting to see.\u00a0I\u2019ve got things in the pipeline, dreams and hopes, but right now I just don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
