Dodd, who spoke to TV Insider in a joint interview with her two scene partners, chimed in that the puzzle scene symbolized the trio\u2019s dynamic. In Quinn\u2019s book, John\u2019s cousin \u2014 who is a man named Michael rather than Michaela \u2014 and Francesca grieve together and eventually strike up their own romance.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey both complete Francesca\u2019s puzzle, and it takes both of them to complete her, and they\u2019re both just as needed as each other,\u201d Dodd said. \u201cAnd [John\u2019s] bit is the ground, and [Michaela\u2019s] bit is the sky, which I think really speaks to both of their characters. \u2029So I think it\u2019s a very, very clever scene. I think the writers have done a really lovely job.\u201d<\/p>\n
Though John watching Francesca and Michaela banter over the puzzle is his final scene, it wasn\u2019t the last Alli filmed. It was Cressida\u2019s ball, during which Francesca and John shared a sweet moment of peace, gazing at the moon.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd then, I think it was Tom [Verica], he sort of wrapped me, and someone came around with some flowers, and I was like, where did they come from?\u2019 and I started crying,\u201d the actor recalled. \u201cIt was really emotional, especially saying goodbye to all these amazing people who I\u2019d spent so many months with filming this great show.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that point \u2014 and up until John\u2019s death \u2014 both Alli and Dodd think their characters have a deep love for each other, which makes John\u2019s death all the more devastating. Francesca may have had trouble reaching her \u201cpinnacle\u201d with John earlier in the season, but John is still Francesca\u2019s first love, according to the actress.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s interesting that there\u2019s been talk around the fact that you have platonic love because she\u2019s not reaching a pinnacle, when that\u2019s actually a real female experience for a lot of people, and it doesn\u2019t mean that there\u2019s not love in that relationship,\u201d Dodd explained.\u2029\u201dI think they\u2019re deeply in love, and I think the patience that they show with each other and the respect that they show with each other is beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued, \u201cWe keep coming back to the fact that they met the year before. [They\u2019ve] really not been together that long, and just because there\u2019s not fireworks and passion, like the realistic view on a relationship is that you have to choose them every single day, and that\u2019s what I think you\u2019re seeing is that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alli agreed with his costar. \u201cYes, [pinnacles] are great, but they don\u2019t define relationships or define the love that two people have for each other,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd one of the things that John asks her when it doesn\u2019t quite happen is, \u2018How did it make you feel? \u2029And she was, like, tingly? Or was it, like, lovely?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWarm,\u201d Dodd suggested.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it\u2019s like, that\u2019s the most important thing,\u201d Alli said. \u201cIt\u2019s not about sort of the pinnacle as a whole, it\u2019s about going through that journey together, and it\u2019s a delicate journey, and I think John and Fran go through that quite nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n
