Thrash<\/em> is here to induce your fear of sharks and impending climate change.<\/p>\n The Netflix<\/a> thriller, written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, takes the Jaws<\/em> approach in keeping viewers on the edge of their seats, while posing questions about humanity.<\/p>\n \u201cTommy\u2019s known for these kinds of movies,\u201d Phoebe Dynevor, who stars as Lisa, a newly single, nine-months pregnant woman trapped in her car following a massive Category 5 hurricane that brings hungry sharks into the flooded South Carolina town she resides in, told Blavity\u2019s Shadow and Act.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s the element of gore. There\u2019s an element of comedy, and definitely, you\u2019re on the edge of your seat,\u201d Dynevor continued. \u201cShark movies really have an audience, and this one, it\u2019s hurricanes and sharks, and there\u2019s some real-world elements to this film. You know that the weather is something that\u2019s causing a lot of damage to our world, and is caused by humans, by our own impact. So, there\u2019s a lot of real-life consequences that are happening in this movie, and the sharks are the fun part, I would say.\u201d<\/p>\n The complexity of her character, Dakota, an agoraphobic young woman, is what drew Whitney Peak<\/a> to the script in the first place, but breathing life into her was a different ball game.<\/p>\n Peak shared that Dakota is someone who feels so much, but she doesn\u2019t know how to give herself room to express herself or to let it out.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd she\u2019s dealt with so much,\u201d she added before mentioning that she and Wirkola discussed Dakota\u2019s experiences before the film\u2019s events transpire \u201cto build her up and then get her to a point where she\u2019s able to say, \u2018F**k it,\u2019 and then go out and try to fight some sharks.\u201d<\/p>\n For Djimon Hounsou, bringing authenticity to Dale, Dakota\u2019s marine research uncle, was a no-brainer, given his personal fight to raise awareness of the global impact of climate change.<\/p>\n He mentioned that he had opened a 2009 United Nations summit talking about climate change, global warming and the impact that fossil fuel use is causing such a dramatic change in our weather patterns.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was a rude awakening for me to understand how much we\u2019ve contributed to this devastating weather,\u201d Hounsou reflected.<\/p>\n \u201cPretty much around the world, there are so many countries that are suffering from it today, and so that was very realistic to me, and Tommy was able to capture that and insert that into the story here.
