Jonah Hill<\/a> has a new movie out, and it\u2019s all about cancel culture in Hollywood.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n The Outcome<\/i>, which came out on Apple TV today<\/a>, stars Keanu Reeves<\/a> as a beloved Hollywood icon named Reef Hawk, who is forced to confront his past after a bizarre video threatens to end his career. You can watch the trailer here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n You could argue that the premise is kind of ironic, considering that Jonah \u2014 who co-wrote, directed, and acts in the movie \u2014 faced intense public scrutiny in 2023 when his ex-girlfriend of roughly a year, Sarah Brady, accused him of emotional abuse<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Jonah did not address Sarah’s allegations at the time. Instead, he stayed out of the public eye for a few years, married<\/a> his longtime girlfriend, Olivia Millar, and welcomed two children with her.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Now, after years away<\/a>, Jonah is back in the spotlight to promote The Outcome<\/i>, and he\u2019s sharing his thoughts on the tricky topic of celebrity cancellations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Speaking with Martin Scorsese<\/a> for Interview Magazine<\/a>, Jonah explained why he wanted to make a movie about a celebrity\u2019s reputation being ruined in the first place, saying: \u201cWhen all this cancel culture stuff was happening, I thought, \u2018Who\u2019s the one person that people would be the most bummed about getting canceled?\u2019 It would be Keanu Reeves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Though it centers on a celeb, Jonah explained that the movie is actually representative of the wider social media world we live in. \u201cNot many people can relate to a movie star, but the way I view it is, we\u2019ve all turned ourselves into scorched, middle-aged movie stars by putting our lives up for judgment on social media every second of every day,\u201d he said. \u201cYou build an identity just like a famous person does.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Bringing it back to the fame aspect, Jonah said he was able to \u201crelate to\u201d the \u201cparanoia\u201d that Keanu\u2019s character is constantly battling in the film. This prompted Martin to say that the nature of the world now is all about \u201cbuilding up a god and goddess and then wanting to tear them down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n In agreement, Jonah suggested that people derive enjoyment from the public cycle of celebrity cancellations. \u201cThere\u2019s the entertainment of the hero soaring, the entertainment of them being knocked down, and then the entertainment of them rising from the ashes,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n \u201cBut the truth is, modern entertainment is pretty much just tearing someone down,\u201d he added. \u201c…If you look at \u2018entertainment,\u2019 the business around it plays to our sickest parts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Well, that\u2019s Jonah\u2019s take.
