Harry Potter<\/em><\/a> star Ralph Fiennes<\/a>\u00a0just revealed his top pick to play Voldemort in the upcoming HBO series<\/a> \u2014 and his first choice might surprise fans of the franchise.<\/p>\n

In the original film series, Fiennes played He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named starting in the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire<\/a><\/em>, when the villain finally returns from the dead. It\u2019s unclear when the upcoming series will fully introduce its version of Voldemort. But as of writing, there has been no casting news for the Dark Lord.<\/p>\n

Fiennes recently appeared on the BBC<\/a>\u2018s The Claudia Winkleman Show<\/em>, during which he discussed the idea of returning to the iconic role 15 years later.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember being asked the question, \u2018Would I reprise the part?\u2019 he admitted. \u201cThis was some years ago. And I said, \u2018Yes, I\u2019d love to.’\u201d Unfortunately, Fiennes said that \u201cnothing\u2019s happened,\u201d conceding, \u201cThat ship has sailed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fiennes added, \u201cBut I\u2019ll tell you, Tilda Swinton<\/a> was mentioned somewhere as being a contender, and I think she would be amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

In September 2025, entertainment insider Daniel Richtman claimed via X<\/a> that the HBO series is \u201cauditioning both men and women\u201d for Lord Voldemort. Both Swinton \u2014 who memorably played Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones<\/a><\/em> \u2014 and Oppenheimer<\/em><\/a> star Cillian Murphy<\/a> became popular fan-castings. However, Murphy shut down the speculation during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused<\/em><\/a> podcast that same month.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, he told host Josh Horowiz. \u201cI don\u2019t know anything about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy pointed out, \u201cIt\u2019s also really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend, so good luck to whoever\u2019s gonna fill those shoes.\u201d Additionally, he joked that he is \u201cvery attached\u201d to his nose.<\/p>\n

HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that the Dark Lord had not yet been cast during a March interview with Variety<\/a>. \u201cAs a rule, I would say any rumors \u2013 don\u2019t [believe them]. I<\/em> don\u2019t even know who we\u2019re casting,\u201d he insisted, adding, \u201cI would take everything you read with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n
