Jonah Hill<\/a> still thinks it\u2019s \u201cbizarre\u201d that the artist formerly known as Kanye West<\/a> said his performance in the 2012 comedy 21 Jump Street <\/em>made him \u201clike Jewish people again.\u201d<\/p>\n In an interview with Zane Lowe<\/a> for Apple Music, which can be seen in full here<\/a>, Hill spoke about his upcoming directorial effort Outcome<\/em>, in which he plays the crisis lawyer of a character portrayed by Keanu Reeves<\/a>. Lowe highlighted that there\u2019s a joke in the movie about Ye, who famously said in 2023 that he \u201clikes Jewish people again\u201d after watching Hill in 21 Jump Street<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cIn my office, there\u2019s a big framed picture of Ye,\u201d Hill told Lowe. \u201cHe was a client of [my character].\u201d During the scene, Hill\u2019s character brings Reeve\u2019s character into his office for a meeting after a mysterious, controversial video surfaced online. The meeting is filled with a bunch of different figures representing different demographics, including a women\u2019s rights lawyer and a Black civil rights leader.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd then there\u2019s a joke, I say, \u2018Where\u2019s the guy from the anti-semitism community? Why isn\u2019t he here?\u2019\u201d Hill continued. \u201cMy character\u2019s assistant says, \u2018Oh, we did the research, and it turns out hating Jews doesn\u2019t hurt your career, it helps it.\u2019 And it cuts to the picture of Kanye.\u201d<\/p>\n COMPLEX SHOP:<\/b> Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Obsess.<\/a><\/p>\n He said that he didn\u2019t include the joke in the movie to \u201ctake a shot at Kanye,\u201d but because of that strange moment in 2023 amid Ye\u2019s continued embrace of antisemitism.<\/p>\n \u201cI love the Kanye that I\u2019ve met over the years,\u201d he said. \u201cI love the artist. I think there is no artist I probably love more across any genre ever. I think he is probably the greatest artist to ever live. Even he thinks that. \u2026 He\u2019s a genius, and the stuff with the hate sucks. What are you going to say? It sucks, no matter who you are, to hear that.\u201d<\/p>\n Hill said that he doesn\u2019t want to \u201cpunch someone while they\u2019re down,\u201d but highlighted that he became a talking point for Ye during the peak of his antisemitic behavior.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the midst of all this Jew stuff, he did [post an] Instagram picture of me in the 21 Jump Street<\/em> poster,\u201d he said. \u201cMy phone blew up. He said something along the lines of, \u2018I don\u2019t hate Jews anymore because I love Jonah Hill.\u2019 So, I felt that he did this bizarre public thing to kind of make up, like, \u2018it\u2019s all good because I love Jonah.\u2019 [It] just sat with me in a way that\u2019s like\u2026 I love him still, and I hope whatever happens, he can heal or whatever, and everyone can heal from that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n Hill expressed hope that Ye could \u201cmake it right\u201d with those he\u2019s hurt, and stressed that he\u2019s got no beef with him. \u201cI just put that in there like, \u2018Yo, you\u2019re going to put the 21 Jump Street<\/em> poster up there and say you don\u2019t hate Jews anymore? That\u2019s pretty wild. I\u2019m gonna put a picture of you saying, like, hating Jews helps your career,\u2019\u201d he continued. \u201cThat\u2019s a joke on my part. It doesn\u2019t help your career, but it\u2019s just me having fun with like, all right, I\u2019m a comedian. It\u2019s not horribly mean to Kanye, that joke.\u201d<\/p>\n Hill\u2019s interview with Lowe comes just as it was announced that Ye has been blocked from traveling to the UK, resulting in the cancellation of Wireless Festival<\/a>, where he was set to headline all three nights.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Home Office has withdrawn Ye’s ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom.
