It\u2019s now a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2024-09-25\/kit-connor-heartstopper-season-3-romeo-juliet\">global phenomenon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alice Oseman\u2019s fictional world, where LGBTQ+ teenagers freely explore love, friendship and identity, expanded first to graphic novels before being turned into a hugely popular Netflix series. <\/p>\n<p>The rom-com, which debuted in 2021, is part of a growing portfolio of young adult book adaptations that have flooded streaming platforms in recent years. Uhls, founder and chief executive of UCLA\u2019s Center for Scholars &amp; Storytellers.<\/p>\n<p>Audiences gravitate toward authenticity, Uhls added. Young people increasingly want to see stories that reflect their lives, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-10-22\/teens-do-watch-movies-but-they-want-more-realistic-storylines\"><u>according to a survey<\/u><\/a> administered by Uhls\u2019 nonprofit last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has to resonate and feel authentic to the time,\u201d Uhls said. \u201cThis generation really sees stereotypes pretty quickly \u2026 they\u2019ll see inappropriate behavior quickly, and they will call it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viewers are hungry for diverse casting and storylines across Hollywood. Last year, audiences showed up to the theater at higher rates for movies that had people of color in the cast, according to the annual <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2026-03-12\/hollywood-films-diversity-drops-ucla-diversity-report\">UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report,<\/a> released in March. <\/p>\n<p>Netflix\u2019s focus on YA adaptations has paid off, driving more than 1.2 billion total views worldwide in 2025. Audiences are drawn to the platform\u2019s fresh and inclusive interpretations of the genre, said Jinny Howe, Netflix\u2019s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is still harder to get marginalized stories sort of made and seen by people, but \u2018Heartstopper\u2019 is part of that journey,\u201d said Oseman, who also serves as series creator and executive producer. debuted on Netflix last year,  follows two young Black protagonists who <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2025-05-16\/forever-netflix-art-la-black-artists-edwards-home\">fall in love in Los Angeles.<\/a> The audience had \u201csuch a fervent passion for that story, I think, because of the specificity of those perspectives,\u201d Howe said. \u201cLos Angeles was really seen through these eyes.\u201d The show\u2019s second season will reportedly start filming in May. <\/p>\n<p>Prime Video has leaned heavily into the genre, platforming hits like \u201cMaxton Hall,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2023-08-10\/red-white-royal-blue-prime-video-gay-romantic-comedy-bros-fire-island-happiest-season\">\u201cRed, White &amp; Royal Blue\u201d<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2023-07-06\/summer-i-turned-pretty-jenny-han-to-all-the-boys-xo-kitty\">\u201cThe Summer I Turned Pretty,\u201d<\/a> which wrapped up a three-season run last year and has a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2025-09-18\/the-summer-i-turned-pretty-finale-feature-film\">film<\/a> in the works. <\/p>\n<p>Young adult adaptations are at the core of the platform\u2019s broader efforts to champion diversity in storytelling, said Peter Friedlander, Prime Video\u2019s head of global TV. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always looking for shows that give a reflection or a window into other people\u2019s stories,\u201d said Friedlander, also former head of U.S. and Canadian scripted series at Netflix. \u201cThis business has been building for a long time, and it\u2019s exciting to see what\u2019s coming out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representation in these shows, however, is still far from perfect, said Nicholas Rickards, a doctoral candidate at Brock University in Ontario, Canada, whose research focuses on YA adaptations. Many shows that center a woman of color often still feature white male love interests, he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudios aren\u2019t totally prepared to tell that story yet,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"filling-a-ya-void\" class=\"subhead\">Filling a YA void<\/h2>\n<p>Streaming platforms\u2019 focus on YA adaptations came as cable TV, which previously dominated the genre, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/books\/story\/2025-04-14\/ya-literature-young-adult-festival-of-books-2025\">tapered off.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>YA  retellings had long captivated audiences, finding <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-shailene-woodley-young-adult-film-adaptations-20130723-story.html\">widespread success during the 2010s<\/a>. Networks like the CW and Freeform reigned then, airing now-classic teen dramas like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/blogs\/show-tracker\/story\/2011-01-10\/pretty-little-liars-recap-careless-and-confused\">\u201cPretty Little Liars\u201d<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/blogs\/show-tracker\/story\/2009-11-20\/the-vampire-diaries-the-new-vampire-on-the-block\">\u201cThe Vampire Diaries.\u201d<\/a> The \u201cTwilight\u201d and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2024-06-06\/hunger-games-haymitch-abernathy-prequel-new-book-movie\">\u201cHunger Games\u201d universes<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/movies\/moviesnow\/la-et-mn-john-green-universal-acquires-let-it-snow-20140919-story.html\">John Green<\/a> book adaptations also dominated the box office. <\/p>\n<p>Then the entertainment landscape changed. Social media and streaming became <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/newsletter\/2025-04-08\/why-hollywood-is-not-alarmed-enough-about-gen-z-the-wide-shot\">preferred modes of content consumption<\/a> for young audiences, paving the way for platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and  HBO Max. Diverse storylines, coupled with the global reach of streaming platforms, have reignited an explosion of YA adaptations, and it\u2019s a race that isn\u2019t slowing down. <\/p>\n<p>Younger generations are often difficult to attract, and YA  reimaginings are just one way platforms are trying to break into the teenage demographic, said Jennifer Hessler, an assistant professor of cinema Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>Younger generations are the target demographic of YA  series at Prime Video, but the shows attract audiences of all ages, Friedlander said. Identifying and helping cultivate fresh storylines driven by relatable characters are integral to that success. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you really make the best version of a story, it can ripple out among different fandoms,\u201d Friedlander said. \u201cI do think that\u2019s the ability of what streaming platforms can achieve as well, because you can really introduce the narrative to wider audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"made-for-streaming\" class=\"subhead\">Made for streaming<\/h2>\n<p>Netflix doesn\u2019t have a formula for a breakout success, Howe said, but strong voices that feel universal must be at the show\u2019s core.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Norton, whose work focuses on book-to-screen adaptations, said he looks for characters he can fall in love with when choosing books to pitch for  development. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the most important thing \u2014 to find a main character or a set of characters that I think the audience will resonate with,\u201d said Norton, who is an executive producer  of Netflix\u2019s \u201cGeek Girl,\u201d which was greenlit for a second season. <\/p>\n<p>The structures of young adult novels \u201clend themselves really nicely\u201d to short TV series, Howe said, because it allows fans \u201cto have more time as they\u2019re living inside of these worlds and these experiences \u2014 it\u2019s just that much more enriching.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Streaming platforms usually release shorter seasons, often with six to 10 episodes \u2014 about half the episode order of a typical cable TV series. <\/p>\n<p>Balancing the expectations of a book\u2019s existing fandom while trying to attract a new audience is a major component of Friedlander\u2019s role, he said, adding that \u201cthe television medium will often demand that you do change some of the journey along the way so it fits the rhythm.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Norton, the showrunner of Netflix\u2019s \u201cFinding Her Edge,\u201d said much of that show\u2019s plot diverges from Jennifer Iacopelli\u2019s novel. However, he focused on maintaining the book\u2019s tone and found \u201cthe readership is actually very forgiving if you keep the characters whole and intact, but give them more to do.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Oseman\u2019s shift from novelist to TV writer \u2014 and now screenwriter \u2014 came with a steep learning curve. The growing pains were worth it, she said, because her story reached audiences who might never have picked up her books.
