<\/p>\n
For those who only know CinemaCon from \u201cThe Studio,\u201d<\/a> just know that the experience of actually being in Las Vegas for a convention of theater owners isn\u2019t entirely as it appears in Seth Rogen\u2019s hit show. But it\u2019s also not not<\/em> like that (for one thing: we know we\u2019ll see Matt Belloni in Caesar\u2019s Palace somewhere).<\/p>\n It\u2019s not just dry presentations. At minimum, studio distributors will go all out with costumes and dancers to spice up the most basic block of time. One time, Tom Cruise sent in a video message from atop the plane that appeared at the end of the latest \u201cMission: Impossible.\u201d<\/a> So while the event may boast a litany of movie trailers that won\u2019t be online for months, it\u2019s still fun to see what movies studio execs are actually excited<\/em> about as part of their canned hype presentations.<\/p>\n This year, IndieWire will roundup the best from each studio presentation and try and highlight things that don\u2019t always get the attention they deserve when they\u2019re firing off one trailer after another. But before we arrive on the Strip, we had a few burning questions about what we might expect this year.<\/p>\n This time last year, Warner Bros. was teasing some original films that exhibitors didn\u2019t know what to make of, including \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d \u201cSinners,\u201d \u201cWeapons,\u201d and \u201cThe Bride!\u201d They all looked like ambitious swings, and almost all of them hit it big (in hindsight, we hyped \u201cThe Bride!\u201d more than we should have<\/a>).<\/p>\n Now with a boatload of Oscar wins in tow, WB is poised to take a victory lap in front of theater owners, but do they have the same impressive slate this year as last year? Movies like \u201cThe Bride!\u201d and \u201cMortal Kombat II\u201d were already pushed back into this year. There\u2019s a few more sequels on the docket as well, like \u201cPractical Magic 2,\u201d \u201cEvil Dead Burn,\u201d and eventually \u201cMinecraft 2.\u201d But the studio also has the Tom Cruise film \u201cDigger,\u201d \u201cThe End of Oak Street,\u201d and new films from JJ Abrams, M. Night Shyamalan, and Sam Esmail.<\/p>\n As we noted in our recent survey of theater owners<\/a> about how to address challenges that ail theaters, Universal came up a lot because of the studio\u2019s commitment to shift to longer theatrical windows of eventually 45 days before films go to PVOD. That\u2019s exactly the window Cinema United head Michael O\u2019Leary called for in his State of the Union last year, and we\u2019re sure that other theater owners will let Universal know how much they appreciate them.<\/p>\n But it\u2019s also been three straight years that the studio closed its presentation with \u201cWicked\u201d footage, so without that, the studio will be leaning on footage from Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d Georgia Oakley\u2019s \u201cSense and Sensibility\u201d from Focus Features, and of course Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d Nothing wrong with that as a finale.<\/p>\n Cinema United is currently lobbying to prevent Paramount from merging with Warner Bros.<\/a>, saying it will be bad for theaters long term because of the historical evidence that shows fewer movies are produced when after a merger, most notably when Disney absorbed Fox. Paramount has said that, between the two studios, it will release 30 movies a year<\/a>, something that it says it is already at if you look at Paramount\u2019s slate and WB\u2019s combined slates for 2026.<\/p>\n Will any of that matter? Paramount already had a solid hit this year with \u201cScream 7,\u201d and it has a variety of franchise movies on the slate, including \u201cScary Movie,\u201d \u201cJackass 5,\u201d \u201cStreet Fighter,\u201d \u201cThe Angry Birds Movie 3,\u201d and not to mention a concert film directed by Billie Eilish and James Cameron in 3-D. Get those 3-D glasses ready.<\/p>\n The first look anyone had at \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d came at CinemaCon a year ago<\/a>, and it was the crown jewel of what would be a robust Amazon MGM theatrical slate in 2026. Even they didn\u2019t predict the film would be as big as it turned out to be, so they will be taking all the pats on the back they deserve. But it had a couple of letdowns early in the year between \u201cMercy,\u201d \u201cCrime 101,\u201d and \u201cMelania,\u201d and the studio last year already teased films like \u201cMasters of the Universe,\u201d \u201cIs God Is,\u201d and \u201cVerity.\u201d<\/p>\n So what else might we get a look at? Nicolas Cage as John Madden in \u201cMadden\u201d is a good bet, and most likely Peter Farrelly\u2019s \u201cI Play Rocky\u201d and \u201cSpaceballs 2.\u201d But the biggest flex might be trotting out newly-minted Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan to hype up his \u201cThe Thomas Crown Affair,\u201d which is currently slotted for the same \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d slot in 2027.<\/p>\n New this year to CinemaCon to effectively open the convention is what they\u2019re calling the CinemaCon Showcase<\/a>, featuring indie distributors Angel Studios, Studiocanal, and Sony Pictures Classics, which doesn\u2019t usually get a place at CinemaCon even though Sony Pictures is typically a fixture on opening night.<\/p>\n Angel has become a recent mainstay at CinemaCon, but always in an early-morning breakfast presentation, not on the main stage. And this inaugural showcase already took a hit when Row K, the fledgling and now troubled new distributor<\/a>, pulled out of its planned presentation.<\/p>\n The question then is if there are the same big announcements or Vegas spectacles that usually grace the Colosseum stage or if it will be as well-attended as the other presentations as some theater owners still are arriving. But more opportunities to showcase a wider array of films is always welcome.<\/p>\n In something of a surprise, Lionsgate will not be among the presenters this year at CinemaCon. The studio won\u2019t be completely MIA, as it\u2019s hosting a reception mid-week, but after a down year in 2025, the studio has a pretty impressive 2026 slate that includes its Michael Jackson biopic \u201cMichael\u201d<\/a> and a new \u201cHunger Games\u201d prequel\/sequel, not to mention it\u2019s also currently filming the follow-up to \u201cThe Passion of the Christ\u201d<\/a> and a new \u201cRambo\u201d movie. Maybe it will make a big statement in 2027.<\/p>\n Sure, there\u2019s excitement to get the first full looks at big blockbusters like \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d DC films like \u201cClayface,\u201d and Sony\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man\u201d movies \u201cBrand New Day\u201d and \u201cBeyond the Spider-Verse.\u201d But what other surprises or announcements could be in store?<\/p>\n Sony formally announced its cast and release dates for the four Beatles biopics last spring at CinemaCon<\/a>, so with the movie already filming, could we get some sort of in-progress tease? The much-anticipated next film from the Daniels had a blow when it lost star Ryan Gosling<\/a>, but could we get a new star announcement or even a modicum of details? We wouldn\u2019t be surprised if Warner Bros. talked about its new \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d film \u201cThe Hunt for Gollum,\u201d not to mention the new one that Stephen Colbert was announced to be co-writing.<\/p>\n And we\u2019re going to leave this little nugget here: Cineverse is doing a basketball event featuring none other than the new Air Bud, so if that\u2019s not the winner of the week, we don\u2019t know what is.<\/p>\n Sign up for Indiewire’s Newsletter<\/a>.
