Zendaya\u2019s Michelle Jones-Watson has a new beau in \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d the upcoming installment in the web-slinging series.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not that she\u2019s dumped her man, Tom Holland\u2019s Peter Parker. She just doesn\u2019t remember that he exists. That\u2019s because the prior \u201cSpider-Man\u201d adventure, 2021\u2019s \u201cNo Way Home,\u201d concluded with Spider-Man making the difficult decision to erase his identity from the world, leaving his girlfriend and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) to forget about him. In a new clip that debuted exclusively at CinemaCon on Monday night, Peter finds out the hard way that Michelle has moved on. (He sees her making out with someone at a party.)<\/p>\n
More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Holland wasn\u2019t at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners that\u2019s currently taking place at Caesars Palace, but he appeared via hologram to introduce an extended look at the film. \u201cPeter had to make a sacrifice to make all his friends forget who he is,\u201d Holland teased from the stage at the Colosseum. \u201cHere, you\u2019ll see some of the consequences of that choice.\u201d<\/p>\n As Holland tees up, the sequence begins with Peter Parker at his local bodega as Ned walks in to buy a beer and keg\u2026 all without noticing his one-time bestie who is hunched in the corner. Peter follows Ned to a crowded college party, complete with red solo cups and decorative lights adorning the walls. At the rager, Peter notices that Ned has a conspiracy-esque cork board with headlines about the one and only Spider-Man.<\/p>\n \u201cHe actually saved me and my friend\u2019s lives in high school,\u201d Ned tells the stranger (Peter) in his midst. \u201cEver since, I\u2019ve been trying to figure out who he is. Not to unmask him to the world, just to thank him.\u201d<\/p>\n Ned rattles off the one thing he\u2019s certain about the masked hero: \u201cWe know he\u2019s definitely from Queens\u2026\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been able to narrow it down to two prime suspects\u201d before revealing photos of Flash Thompson and Professor Harrington. \u201cIf you knew who they were, it would really blow your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n Before she starts kissing her new love interest, Michelle interrupts the two men to acknowledge just how many bodies are at their party. \u201cThere\u2019s like 50 people in our apartment,\u201d she says. \u201cStatistically speaking, it means at least two are sociopaths, which is cool.\u201d<\/p>\n Peter introduces himself to her as \u201cMaynard\u201d and tells her \u201cI\u2019m just a neighbor from across the hall.\u201d<\/p>\n He hands her a small bouquet of flowers, prompting her to say \u2014 \u201cfriendly neighbor.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d was one of the first major post-pandemic blockbusters, earning a massive $1.9 billion worldwide. Needless to say, exhibitors are quite excited about the newest adventure. This is the fourth \u201cSpider-Man\u201d with Holland in the Spandex suit. Set four years after the events of the third installment, the film picks up as Peter is living alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Per the official logline, \u201cCrime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he\u2019s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city \u2014 a full-time Spider-Man \u2014 but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.\u201d<\/p>\n Along with Holland, Zendaya, Batalon and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Sadie Sink is joining the cast. Though her role in the film hasn\u2019t been established, it\u2019s been suggested she could play \u201cX-Men\u201d\u00a0mutant Jean Grey, a character who has been brought to the screen in the past by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner.<\/p>\n Destin Daniel Cretton (\u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings\u201d) is directing the film, taking over for Jon Watts, who helmed the first three films in the franchise. \u201cSpider Man 4,\u201d which swings to theaters on July 31, is one of two major Marvel movies to debut this year. The other is Disney\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d which will bring back the kitchen sink of Avengers characters on Dec. 18.<\/p>\n Holland called \u201cBrand New Day\u201d the \u201cmost emotional \u2018Spider-Man\u2019 we\u2019ve ever made.
