The Top 9 artists hit the stage for\u00a0The Voice<\/a><\/em> Semifinals on the Monday, April 13, episode. John Legend<\/a>, Kelly Clarkson<\/a>, and Adam Levine<\/a> each went into the Semifinals with three artists on their teams, all hoping for a spot in the finale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After winning the in-season All-Star Competition<\/a>, Clarkson earned the right to have two of her artists advance to the Finals, while Legend and Levine each had one singer make the Top 4. The finalists were chosen by an audience of superfans and former contestants, who voted on their favorites throughout the night.<\/p>\n

This is the first season in The Voice\u2019s<\/em> history that the finalists and winner will be chosen by an in-studio audience, as opposed to viewers watching from home. Scroll down for a recap of the performances and to find out who\u2019s moving on to the April 14 finale.<\/p>\n

KJ Willis \u2014 Team Legend<\/h2>\n

Team Legend\u2019s KJ Willis kicked off the night of the Semifinals performances. His coach selected a song that would help him \u201csoar\u201d: Stevie Wonder<\/a>\u2018s \u201cHigher Ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve grown on me so much as the show has progressed,\u201d Levine admitted. \u201cWhat I loved was the major runs. I\u2019ve never heard anyone approach it like that. Creatively speaking, I really loved all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarkson applauded KJ for starting the show in a big way. \u201cThat was so incredible,\u201d she added. \u201cYou have that preacher-esque power to you that I love. You naturally have the gift of inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

KJ\u2019s coach couldn\u2019t have been more impressed by the performance. \u201cYou can just feel the spirit in you,\u201d Legend gushed. \u201cI feel like you\u2019re growing in your own confidence and taking up space on stage, and America\u2019s getting to see you blossom into the artist you\u2019re supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mikenely Brown \u2014 Team Kelly<\/h2>\n

Clarkson\u2019s contestant Mikenley Brown hoped to show a softer side of herself with her performance of \u201cI\u2019m Not the Only One\u201d by Sam Smith<\/a>. Her coach urged her to go in and out of her head and chest voice throughout the song.<\/p>\n

Legend and Levine both agreed that this was Mikenley\u2019s \u201cbest performance\u201d of the show so far. \u201cI think you might\u2019ve snuck up on people and showed them something they may not have expected,\u201d Legend added. \u201cSo well done. I absolutely loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Levine raved over Mikenley\u2019s \u201csuperpower\u201d ability to switch from her head voice to falsetto. Clarkson concluded, \u201cThe believability is a huge thing for me. A lot of people come out here and sing great songs, but I don\u2019t buy it. I buy it from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also praised her artist for holding back on the runs to make them \u201cmore special\u201d when they came out.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Keith \u2014 Team Adam<\/h2>\n

Jeremy Keith hit the stage with a rendition of Babyface<\/a>\u2018s \u201cWhip Appeal\u201d for his Semifinals performance.<\/p>\n

Clarkson praised Jeremy for making it \u201clook so easy,\u201d noting that he has \u201cso many gears, not only to your voice, but your energy.\u201d She also made sure the audience knows \u201cwhat [Jeremy is] doing is incredibly difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Legend, this was his favorite performance from Jeremy so far. \u201cIt showed all the things you had in your toolbox. You were smooth, perfect, pristine in the beginning, but then growled and were passionate by the end. It was a well-rounded performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine applauded Jeremy for accomplishing \u201cexactly what you set out to do\u201d with that Semifinals performance.<\/p>\n

Syd Millevoi \u2014 Team Legend<\/h2>\n

Syd Millevoi returned to the stage next. For the Semifinals, she chose to sing Ariana Grande<\/a>\u2018s \u201cInto You,\u201d hoping to take the coaches\u2019 advice and connect to the audience on a more emotional level with her stripped-down rendition.<\/p>\n

Levine raved over Syd\u2019s range and applauded her for \u201cmaking that effort to make [the performance] something that really spoke from the heart.\u201d Clarkson told the hopeful that she\u2019s a \u201chuge fan\u201d of hers, adding, \u201cI think that you\u2019re incredible and one of my favorites of the whole season. I cannot wait to see what you do regardless of what happens here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, Syd\u2019s coach confirmed that it was his \u201cfavorite performance\u201d that she\u2019s done so far. \u201cI really did love how soulful you were,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cWe talked about how the song was stripped down, but it\u2019s not a sad song. It\u2019s a song about seduction and asserting her power as a woman to make the move, and I loved how you embraced the energy of the song. This show celebrates the voice, and you have a magnificent instrument as a vocalist, and you really deployed it beautifully today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jared Shoemaker \u2014 Team Adam<\/h2>\n

Jared Shoemaker<\/a> revealed that \u201cSoulshine\u201d by the Allman Brothers Band is the song he\u2019s wanted to sing throughout the entire competition so far. In the Semifinals, he finally got his chance.<\/p>\n

Both Clarkson and Legend agreed that Jared showed a different side of himself in the performance, with Clarkson noting, \u201cThat\u2019s so important in a show like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine called his one-chair turn singer a star, adding, \u201cYou have this beautiful voice, and it\u2019s not the voice you\u2019re necessarily expecting. You bridge between rock and roll and country. There\u2019s a hybrid going on. I also love how you are who you are, very unabashedly and very consistently. I think there\u2019s so much promise in you for a wonderful career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liv Ciara \u2014 Team Kelly<\/h2>\n

Liv Ciara<\/a> headed to the Semifinals after having no Blind Audition chairs turned in Season 28. For her Top 9 performance, she sang Irene Cara<\/a>\u2018s \u201cFlashdance\u2026What a Feeling,\u201d but created her own unique arrangement of the track. Clarkson was brought to tears in rehearsals.<\/p>\n

The audience went absolutely wild after Liv sang. \u201cThat was a superstar performance,\u201d Legend agreed, while Levine told Liv that she would be named the winner of\u00a0The Voice<\/em> if the decision was being made in that moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I had a good chance of winning this year and the chances are still there, but they\u2019re not as good as they were before I saw you do what you just did,\u201d the Maroon 5 singer admitted.<\/p>\n

Clarkson made sure to let the other coaches and audience know that Liv arranged the entire performance herself. \u201cIf you win the show or don\u2019t win the show, I\u2019m just so excited to be a tiny, minuscule of participant [in that],\u201d she raved.<\/p>\n

Alexia Jayy \u2014 Team Adam<\/h2>\n

Powerhouse singer Alexia Jayy took on Aretha Franklin<\/a>\u2018s \u201cI Never Loved a Man\u201d for the Semifinals.<\/p>\n

Clarkson pointed out that singing an Aretha Franklin song was a tall order, but gushed, \u201cI don\u2019t like anyone singing [that song] and you can sing it every damn day. You are so gifted. I loved the whole thing. Everything going on is so cool and rock and roll and bold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legend raved over how much \u201ccreative energy and positive energy\u201d Alexia exudes. \u201cYou\u2019re elegant and cool at the same time,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cYou\u2019re an artist\u2019s artist. I absolutely love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine mentioned how proud he is to be Alexia\u2019s coach. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m supposed to tell you because you\u2019re the best singer ever,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel like a superfan right now. I don\u2019t feel like a coach.\u201d<\/p>\n

JW Griffin \u2014 Team Kelly<\/h2>\n

JW Griffin took on Willie Nelson<\/a> for the Semifinals, singing \u201cAngel Flying Too Close to the Ground.\u201d Clarkson called it a \u201csmart\u201d song choice for her country semifinalist.<\/p>\n

Legend called the performance \u201clovely\u201d and praised JW for putting heart and intimacy into his set. \u201cIt really gave us a chance to appreciate the texture of your voice,\u201d he added. \u201cIt was so enjoyable to listen to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine reiterated to JW that he can\u2019t wait for him to make a full record one day and applauded the subtlety in his voice that actually has \u201ca lot to it\u201d when you peel back the layers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you did an incredible job, and I cannot wait to work with you after this, as well,\u201d Clarkson concluded.<\/p>\n

Lucas West \u2014 Team Legend<\/h2>\n

The final performance of the night was from Team Legend artist Lucas West. The guys worked on song choice together and ultimately selected Paul McCartney<\/a>\u2018s \u201cMaybe I\u2019m Amazed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levine made sure to point out that singing that Paul McCartney song \u201crequires everything from a person singing it,\u201d and applauded Lucas for his \u201ccaptivating\u201d voice. \u201cYou\u2019re a real musician, and that adds another dynamic to you that is super compelling,\u201d he confirmed.<\/p>\n

Clarkson told Lucas that he\u2019s the only artist left in the competition whom she\u2019d want to see in a stadium. \u201cYou would just crush in that environment,\u201d she shared. \u201cYou have so much power to your voice.\u201d She also agreed with Levine that Lucas is a \u201cgreat artist overall,\u201d in addition to being a talented singer.<\/p>\n

Finally, Legend praised his contestant for being \u201cthe whole package,\u201d adding, \u201cYou come out here, and you really deliver electric, energetic, beautiful, soulful performances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Who made the Top 4?<\/h2>\n

At the end of the night, Carson Daly<\/a> revealed which four artists are moving onto the Finals based on the audience\u2019s vote. The four finalists are: Alexia Jayy (Team Adam), Lucas West (Team Legend), Liv Ciara (Team Kelly), and Mikenley Brown (Team Kelly).<\/p>\n
