Roblox is excluded from Australia\u2019s ban on social media for under-16s, but it\u2019s very much part of the wider global conversation about children\u2019s digital lives, potential harms and regulation.\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

Its latest announcement<\/a>\u00a0is an effort to get out in front of those debates. In June, Roblox will be rolling out two new \u2018age-based accounts\u2019 for children: \u2018Roblox Kids\u2019 for 5-8 year-olds and \u2018Roblox Select\u2019 for 9-15 year-olds.\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

\u201cThis update will bring age-checks, account-level defaults, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and expanded parental controls together into a unified framework for younger users,\u201d claimed Roblox.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

This will sit alongside Roblox\u2019s systems for age-rating games on its service \u2013 and yes, the company is\u00a0flipping back to using \u2018games\u2019 rather than \u2018experiences\u2019 as its preferred word<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 as well as its moderation technologies.\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

This isn\u2019t just about soothing regulators\u2019 and parents\u2019 concerns. If more countries bring in social-media bans for under-16s, and if Roblox remains outside those bans, its growth in both users and engagement could get a big boost. And it already has 144 million daily users.\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

Talking of those gamers,\u00a0Roblox is also launching a new subscription tier<\/a>\u00a0at the end of April. \u2018Roblox Plus\u2019 will cost $4.99 a month and offer discounts on in-game items and avatars, as well as private servers and other perks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

Roblox will cover the costs of those discounts when paying creators of games, and it\u2019s also offering them an incentive: if players sign up to Roblox Plus from within one of their games they\u2019ll get a bonus payable in the platform\u2019s Robux currency.\n\n\n
