That was the late Igor Margan\u2019s vision when he opened the gritty New Orleans dive in 1989. He wanted it to be a refuge where \u201cyou can come in here and spend days without ever needing to leave,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>At the edge of Faubourg Marigny, Check Point Charlie quickly etched itself into the city\u2019s nightlife because of its 24-hour concept blended with cheap drinks, alternative bands and a laundromat that hummed in the back. That familiar scene came to an end last month, when the bar went dark after the building was sold.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"2\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>The sale points to a broader reshaping of the corner of Esplanade Avenue and Frenchmen Street. Since 2020, fixtures like Avenue Pub and Brothers Three Lounge have ended their round-the-clock service after ownership changes, while Johnny White\u2019s bars on Bourbon Street shut down.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"3\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>Margan, who owned a string of classic dives, didn\u2019t become a patriarch of New Orleans nightlife <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/igor-margan-founder-of-24-7-igor-s-bars-around-new-orleans-dies-at-71\/article_6359d5f2-66a5-5141-a77e-e8b756ba8802.html\" target=\"_blank\">until later in life.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1947 in what was then Yugoslavia, Margan left war-torn Eastern Europe with his family as a child and spent most of his life in New Orleans. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he sold insurance door-to-door before finding his calling in the bar business.<\/p>\n<p>His first venture, Igor\u2019s Lounge &amp; Game Room, which opened on St. Charles Avenue in 1974, drew in a steady clientele of college students. At the time, it was the only bar and grill that doubled as a washateria. Because of its success, Margan decided it was time to expand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"4\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>In 1989, Margan and his wife, course \u2014 drinks,\u201d Margan said in a 1989 interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Named for the famous Cold War crossing point between East and West Berlin, Check Point Charlie opened at the border of the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny. The building dating back to the 19th century had once housed R. Rougelot &amp; Sons \u2014 dubbed \u201cthe largest department store in downtown\u201d in 1920s newspaper archives \u2014 and briefly served as an electrical fixtures store in the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, washers and dryers ran for 75 cents, and the menu featured chicken nuggets, red beans and rice and hot sausage sandwiches.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"5\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>Check Point Charlie became a cultural landmark, drawing what The Times-Picayune in 1992 called \u201ca crossroads clientele \u2014 from tattooed bikers with rings in their noses to businessmen in three-piece suits.\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment_life\/music\/check-point-charlie-closes\/article_afb44f5e-7eb6-45f3-8ae4-8ee0a6211ba4.html\" target=\"_blank\">It hosted<\/a> The Revivalists\u2019 first gig and appeared on screen in Anthony Bourdain\u2019s \u201cA Cook\u2019s Tour\u201d in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Margan\u2019s empire continued to grow. He opened Lucky\u2019s Bar on St. Charles Avenue and Igor\u2019s Buddha Belly on Magazine Street, which has since closed. After his death in 2018, his bars passed to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment_life\/eat-drink\/new-orleans-dive-bar-ms-mae-s-landmark-to-hazy-memories-will-reopen-with-new\/article_a97e1e8e-18ad-11eb-90e3-4b423bc83488.html\" target=\"_blank\">Darren and Susan Brooks<\/a>, who had worked for Margan since the 1990s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"6\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>Days after the sale, on Saturday, Darren Brooks recalled Margan as a \u201cdecorated vet with an enormous work ethic\u201d who was \u201calways puffing on a big cigar,&#8221; and his wife as \u201ca brilliant scholar\u201d who was \u201coften beautifully dressed walking around town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey looked like Hollywood stars of another era,\u201d Darren Brooks said. \u201cReal New Orleans characters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spirit lives on in Igor\u2019s Lounge and Lucky\u2019s, but there won\u2019t be another Check Point Charlie.
