Sure. The architects \u201cwanted to use every square inch of the property to do some type of thoughtful storytelling,\u201d Ziobro says, motioning to the area where a meadow of indigenous grasses will, come spring, replace the snow-dotted dirt. The facade of the building, she explains, is a nod to industrial New Jersey. It began in 2001 as a fan-based collection of donated memorabilia and grew to thousands of pieces, eventually coming to Monmouth in 2011, where it was housed in a tiny Cape Cod cottage on campus and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/njmonthly.com\/articles\/arts-entertainment\/shes-the-one-meet-eileen-chapman-director-of-the-bruce-springsteen-archives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">nurtured by director Eileen Chapman<\/a>, whose tenure as caretaker was the longest in its history. Named Springsteen\u2019s official archive in 2017, the house had a distinctly informal spirit. Guests often dropped by unannounced to take a tour and peruse ephemera (albeit under Chapman\u2019s watchful eye, and not without gloves). When out-of-towners on Springsteen pilgrimages inquired about other local landmarks\u2014say, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/njmonthly.com\/articles\/arts-entertainment\/stone-pony-asbury-park-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">the Stone Pony<\/a>, or <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/njmonthly.com\/articles\/arts-entertainment\/boss-suite-asbury-hotel-asbury-park-bruce-springsteen-danny-clinch-transparent-clinch-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">rock photographer Danny Clinch<\/a>\u2019s gallery\u2014she\u2019d sometimes drive them there herself in her silver Ford Explorer. Music is our most important cultural resource, and\u2026we have nothing?! Currently, a <em>Born to Run<\/em> exhibit is on view in Passaic County, and a national traveling exhibit, \u201cMusic America: Iconic Objects From America\u2019s Music History\u201d (which launched will only accelerate once we open,\u201d Santelli says. \u201cSo this is the staging ground\u2014but America is our proving ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p>More than a decade ago, while serving as founding executive director of the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, Santelli received a call from Chapman about the fan-based collection, which had outgrown its home at the Asbury Park library and was \u201cnot in good shape,\u201d he remembers. \u201cI worked for a museum. I knew what a collection is and how it should be handled, and that wasn\u2019t happening. Fans had done an amazing job assembling this. It felt sinful to let this thing grow mold.\u201d Monmouth\u2019s library, however, declined to take it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I pulled rank and went to the president,\u201d recalls Santelli, a distinguished alum and former faculty member who, by that time, had extensively covered the E Street Band as a journalist and edited Springsteen\u2019s 1998 book, <em>Songs<\/em>. \u201cI said, \u2018I have to tell you: Library of Congress, Smithsonian, they\u2019re calling me\u2026.They want me to introduce them to Bruce Springsteen\u2026and I\u2019ll be damned if I\u2019m the guy who\u2014New Jersey\u2019s favorite son, his legacy is gonna move to Washington, D.C.? Landau\u2019s reaction, to his surprise: \u201cYou\u2019ve gotta tell Bruce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Santelli flew to Jersey and drove out to Springsteen\u2019s home in Colts Neck. \u201cI just remember Jon saying, \u2018Okay, Bob, tell him!\u2019\u201d he says. So he started talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t say anything,\u201d Santelli recalls fondly. \u201cAnd Bruce is relatively a quiet guy. I couldn\u2019t tell whether he was thinking about what he was going to have for lunch, or [his] next song, or this,\u201d he muses. \u201cI just kept going, explaining, because I had this vision. And at the end, he said, in so many words, \u2018Bob, I\u2019m honored; I appreciate that\u2014but I don\u2019t want it to be [all] about me.\u2019 He said something to the effect of, \u2018I\u2019m a chapter in this ongoing story of American music. If you could broaden it so that I\u2019m part of it, but we tell a bigger story, I\u2019d be more comfortable with that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How about, Santelli suggested on the fly, the Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music? Bruce was quiet again, listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then he says, \u2018Well, let\u2019s go see where you want to put it,\u2019\u201d Santelli recalls. He mimics Landau\u2019s jaw dropping. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He and Landau got in their respective cars, Springsteen hopped on his motorcycle, \u201cand we have this little procession\u201d to Monmouth, Santelli says. \u201cI\u2019m going, <em>Holy crap\u2014he\u2019s serious!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When they arrived on the campus, Santelli pointed out the spot where he\u2019d imagined the building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019ll do,\u201d Springsteen said, and got back on his motorcycle. \u201cWell, Bob,\u201d Landau said, turning to Santelli, \u201cget started!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p>Back at the construction site, \u200bour trio donning hard hats, safety glasses and neon-yellow vests, Ziobro points out the 240-seat, Dolby Atmos-certified theater where visitors will see a 20-minute documentary by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/njmonthly.com\/articles\/arts-entertainment\/springsteens-filmmaker-thom-zimny-on-new-road-diary-doc-a-very-emotional-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Springsteen\u2019s longtime filmmaker, Thom Zimny<\/a>. The film will explore New Jersey as a musical \u201cmicrocosm of America,\u201d Springsteen\u2019s vast American music influences; and how he has become the \u201cposter boy\u201d for American music, particularly in Europe, where \u201cso many fans see him as the representation of this country, or what they want this country to be,\u201d Santelli explains. The theater will also function as a performance space for events like the center\u2019s annual American Music Honors. You can use my name, my story, my legacy as a springboard to tell broader stories about American life, history and culture,\u2019\u201d Ziobro says. \u201cThere\u2019s something for everybody. We grab them with the music and use that as a prism through which to explore broader themes in American life: technology, activism, gender, race, class.\u201d There are artifacts (costumes, instruments) and interactive elements (a song bar, a touchable U.S. map). There, visitors can explore menus of curated, digitized archival content such as handwritten lyrics, oral histories and pages from Springsteen\u2019s mother Adele\u2019s lovingly kept scrapbooks. Larger groups and families can book listening booths; serious researchers will reserve time in a private room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to its grand opening on June 7, the center is producing four celebratory concerts. Two at Monmouth\u2019s Pollak Theater will highlight local music (late May) and indigenous music (June 3). A set of shows on June 4 and 5, \u201cMusic America: The Songs That Shaped Us,\u201d at the university\u2019s OceanFirst Bank Center, will feature nearly two dozen artists, including Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney and Rosanne Cash.<\/p>\n<p>Racing toward the finish line, Santelli\u2019s team is \u201cthe little engine that could,\u201d he says. He\u2019s assured them: \u201cThere\u2019s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it\u2019s not a train.\u201d Early one recent morning, Ziobro was sitting on the floor of Santelli\u2019s office in sweats, trying to write a blurb \u201con the history of the intersection between race and music in America for 250 years in 150 words.\u201d This is not, she laughs, a nine-to-five job. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of all-consuming.\u201d In Santelli\u2019s temporary off-campus home, which doubles as a staging area, he wakes to a sea of priceless artifacts, including Springsteen\u2019s old
