The ordinance will be on the city council&#8217;s agenda Thursday, April 16. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"Figure\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n<div class=\"Figure-container\">\n            <\/p>\n<p>Charlie Keegan\/KSHB<\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"Figure-caption\" itemprop=\"caption\">The Kansas City, Missouri, City Council chambers were full of stakeholders during a committee meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We think we have a great project that will ultimately come to pass that we are very appreciative of this process and will maintain our work in it,&#8221; Royals President of Business Operations Brooks Sherman told reporters Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Finance, Governance, and Public Safety Committee reviewed the ordinance Tuesday morning, which sets the framework for negotiations. <\/p>\n<p>The ordinance directs the city manager to pursue a lease and development agreement with the Royals for a stadium in the Washington Square Park area near Union Station and Crown Center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We look very much forward to the continued process,&#8221; Sherman said. &#8220;We\u2019ll continue our work with Mario [Vasquez] and his staff toward an agreement as was put forth in the ordinance today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>KSHB 41&#8217;s Charlie Keegan reports the committee made a few minor amendments to the ordinance, but nothing serious.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a timeline of notable events in the Royals stadium saga:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"rte2-style-ul\">\n<li>Sept. 14, 2021: Sherman announced the team was exploring several sites \u2014 including downtown \u2014 for a new ballpark.<\/li>\n<li>Nov. 15, 2022: In a letter addressed to fans and the Kansas City community, Sherman announced the Royals would leave Kauffman Stadium. The letter said the team would begin looking for a final location for a $2 billion stadium and entertainment district.<\/li>\n<li>June 15, 2023: The Royals said the North Kansas City and East Village sites were the final contenders for the team&#8217;s move.<\/li>\n<li>Dec. 18, 2023: Jackson County legislators introduced an ordinance to extend a 3\/8-cent sales tax for 40 years to help fund a new Royals stadium and renovations at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.<\/li>\n<li>Jan. 5, 2024: The Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs told the community they would remain in Jackson County if voters approved the 3\/8-cent sales tax measure on the April 2024 ballot.<\/li>\n<li>Feb. 12, 2024: The Royals said they prefer building a new ballpark in Kansas City&#8217;s Crossroads Arts District.<\/li>\n<li>April 2, 2024: Jackson County voters rejected the 3\/8-cent sales tax to help fund a new Royals stadium in the Crossroads and a renovated Chiefs stadium.<\/li>\n<li>June 18, 2024: The Kansas Legislature passed a bill to lure a professional team across the state line using STAR Bonds. Three days later, Gov. Laura Kelly signed the bill.<\/li>\n<li>May 29, 2025: Conversations around the Royals building a new stadium in Johnson County grew after the team announced a group affiliated with the Royals purchased the mortgage on the Aspiria campus.<\/li>\n<li>June 14, 2025: Missouri Gov.
