Luminous voices<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Kanopy Dance, Madison\u2019s modern dance company, will collaborate with another company \u2014 Sokolow Theatre\/ Dance Ensemble, from New York City \u2014 on a program to be performed in both cities. \u201cDivine Mythologies<\/strong>\u201d includes the late choreographer Anna Sokolow\u2019s 20-minute-long piece \u201cOdes,\u201d inspired by Greek mythology and set to electronic music, as well as work by Lisa Thurrell inspired by St. Peter\u2019s Basilica. Tickets for performances in Promenade Hall cost $56.48 for adults, with discounts for students and groups.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommitted<\/strong>,\u201d a new play written by Coleman, opens this weekend at Broom Street Theater. The play blends a personal narrative with a social and political one, when a boy\u2019s activist mother is imprisoned in 1963 and \u201chis own protest five years later becomes the key to her freedom.\u201d Matt Korda directs, and Sam White plays the Storyteller in performances at 1119 Williamson St. \u201cCommitted\u201d is part of World Premiere Wisconsin. Advance tickets cost $30.65 or pay-what-you-can at the door, starting 30 minutes before show time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Run for a cause<\/strong><\/h3>\n

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and students at UW-Madison are organizing a fundraiser called the Survivor Stride 5K<\/strong>. The event, now in its third year, raises funds for local sexual assault prevention organizations. The race begins at Library Mall, where a resource fair starts at 10 a.m., followed by the race at 11 a.m. Registration is $7, but $20 gets you a t-shirt as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Poet and culture critic Eileen G\u2019Sell will be visiting Madison to discuss her nonfiction book \u201cLipstick<\/strong>,\u201d \u201ca roving exploration of the tensions between femininity and feminism.\u201d The book is part of Bloomsbury Publishing\u2019s Object Lessons series, which investigates \u201cthe hidden lives of ordinary things.\u201d G\u2019Sell will read at A Room of One\u2019s Own, 2717 Atwood Ave., at 1 p.m., followed by an open conversation with Meghan Allynn Johnson of the Madison Death Studio.<\/p>\n
