April is World Wish Month. WTOP has teamed up with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic to spotlight the amazing kids and volunteers who help make their wishes come true.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Choosing a wish was not a piece of cake for 15-year-old Tabitha Hyun.<\/p>\n The Baltimore, Maryland, high school freshman, who has been fighting leukemia, admits it was \u201ckind of hard to figure out what I wanted to do for my wish.\u201d\n<\/p>\n During a Make-A-Wish open house at WTOP, Hyun\u2019s father said his daughter was not exaggerating.<\/p>\n \u201cIt took a long time to kind of center in on what wish she wanted to do. I wouldn\u2019t have minded if she said, \u2018I\u2019d like to meet Lamar Jackson,\u2019\u201d Dan Hyun said, laughing.<\/p>\n When Tabitha finally made up her mind, she chose with her heart \u2014 and her stomach.<\/p>\n \u201cMy wish was to meet chef Esther Choi in New York,\u201d she said. \u201cShe seemed really cool, and I thought it would be a great wish.\u201d<\/p>\n The pick impressed Tabitha\u2019s family, who traveled with her to the Big Apple.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was an incredible experience for the whole family, reminding us that even in the hardest times, good comes out of it,\u201d Dan said.<\/p>\n Thanks to Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, Tabitha got to step into the kitchen at M\u014fkbar and make dumplings alongside Choi, who famously toppled Bobby Flay on \u201cIron Chef.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI thought she was really cool because she cooked Korean food, and I really like Korean food,\u201d Tabitha said.<\/p>\n Dan said Choi went above and beyond for his daughter.<\/p>\n \u201cHer and her team went all out. They had a special chef\u2019s coat for Tabitha to autograph,\u201d he said. \u201cSo many different presents, along with the actual experience.\u201d<\/p>\n Choi\u2019s team researched Tabitha and discovered she is a huge Harry Potter fan, so they surprised her with treats fitting for a Hufflepuff.<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s incredibly busy, so even getting it on a calendar was not a small thing,\u201d Dan said. \u201cFor us to know the sacrifice she made to carve out that time on behalf of our daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n Even with all the gifts and the experience of cooking, Tabitha said her favorite part was meeting Choi.<\/p>\n \u201cI was kind of nervous, but she was a really nice person. Like, I loved being there,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n As thrilled as his daughter was, Dan was just as grateful to Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic.<\/p>\n \u201cThey recognize the difficulty families are going through,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not trying to minimize those things but recognizing how some of these experiences can frame hope.\u201d<\/p>\n If you would like to help kids like Tabitha live their dreams, visit DMVWishes.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n
