Joe Mantello<\/a> first envisioned himself directing \u201cDeath of a Salesman<\/a>,\u201d with Nathan Lane<\/a> as protagonist Willy Loman, 31 years ago. Never mind that Mantello was directing a comedy \u2015 1995\u2019s \u201cLove! Valour! Compassion!<\/a>\u201d \u2015 at the time, and Lane, then 39, was too young to play the role convincingly. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was just an instinctual moment I had,\u201d Mantello told celebrity.land. \u201cI\u2019ve always known Nathan was a consummate actor who could tackle anything, and I love working with him. He creates a relationship with an audience where they feel very protective towards him, which I think is helpful with the part. Over the years, we\u2019ve talked about it, sometimes jokingly, and as time went on, it became more of a possibility. So, basically, here we are.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mantello\u2019s production of \u201cDeath of a Salesman,\u201d starring Lane, opened on Broadway<\/a> last week. By all accounts, the reimagining of Arthur Miller\u2019s 1949 tragedy \u2015 chronicling the final days of Willy Loman, a past-his-prime, cash-strapped everyman in deteriorating health and mental acuity \u2015 feels bone-chillingly topical. Lane\u2019s co-stars include Laurie Metcalf<\/a> as Willy\u2019s tormented wife, Linda, and Christopher Abbott<\/a> and Ben Ahlers<\/a> as their adult sons, Biff and Happy. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The new \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d marks the seventh time the play has been produced on Broadway. As Mantello began fleshing out his version, he sought out a draft of the play\u2019s script from 1948<\/a>, which included many of Miller\u2019s handwritten notes on the margins. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Using that draft as a springboard, he and scenic designer Chloe Lamford<\/a> opted to place the action inside an industrial, almost dystopian setting that, at times, resembles a parking garage or a subway station rather than a realistic version of the Loman family\u2019s New York home. Rudy Mance\u2019s costumes are deliberately anachronistic, evoking both midcentury and present-day styles. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mantello also breaks from tradition by enlisting two actors, Joaquin Consuelos<\/a> and Jake Termine<\/a>, to appear as Biff and Happy, respectively, in their younger years. In some scenes, the pair even appear alongside Abbott and Ahlers as the older versions of their characters. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOne of the things that Miller talks about [in his notes] is that the scenes from the past aren\u2019t flashbacks, they\u2019re concurrences, meaning they\u2019re happening at the same time as the scenes in the present,\u201d he said. \u201cIt takes place in a psychological space, where Willy is conjuring up all of these scenes. For him, it\u2019s not a revisiting, but a haunting of the past and the present at the same time.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d also marks Mantello\u2019s eighth time working with Metcalf, a two-time Tony and four-time Emmy winner. The actor told Vogue last week<\/a> she avoided viewing earlier productions of \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d in order to \u201ccome at it as fresh as I could,\u201d an approach Mantello says has paid off. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s probably the longest-running creative partner that I\u2019ve had, and it\u2019s reassuring to have her in the room. She\u2019s like this North Star of the kind of actor I wanted to be,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s like a detective, trying to find clues just within the text itself and not making any assumptions about the role.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

An Illinois native, Mantello rose to prominence as an actor, making his Broadway debut in \u201cAngels in America\u201d in 1993. His most widely recognized achievement as a director is the original 2003 Broadway production of \u201cWicked<\/a>,\u201d starring Kristin Chenoweth<\/a> and Idina Menzel<\/a>. Other highlights of his directorial r\u00e9sum\u00e9 include \u201cTake Me Out\u201d and \u201cAssassins,\u201d for which he won back-to-back Tonys in 2003 and 2004, as well as the 2018 revival<\/a> and 2020 Netflix film adaptation<\/a> of \u201cThe Boys in the Band.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As to why Mantello believes \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d \u2015 interpreted by many as Miller\u2019s searing commentary<\/a> on the lie of the American dream<\/a> \u2015 resonates in the current sociopolitical climate, he said, \u201cThere\u2019s an anger in our country right now among people who feel like they\u2019re being erased, and a kind of violence in that erasure. It\u2019s a play about obsolescence, and what it feels like when you\u2019re disappearing. And you really, really feel that in our country right now.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

By all accounts, New York theatergoers seem to agree. \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d has garnered<\/a> near-unanimous praise<\/a> from critics<\/a>, and the play is poised to be a frontrunner in many categories at the Tony Awards in June. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So what does Mantello hope to tackle next?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cA good long rest,\u201d he quipped. \u201cWorking on these masterworks is like going to the gym. They really force you to build up your muscles, because they ask everything of you.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
