Sydney Sweeney is back with a new American Eagle partnership\u00a0 \u2014 but is it as controversial as her \u201cgood jeans\u201d campaign?<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the clothing company unveiled its latest ad with the Euphoria <\/em>actor \u2014 this time, for jean shorts. The new video, posted online<\/a> by the brand, features various shots of Sweeney (now sporting a shorter bob) wearing denim cutoffs as part of a variety of beachy, summertime outfits.<\/p>\n It\u2019s unclear whether the ad is a wink to the controversy of her previous campaign. In the video, Sweeney asks, \u201cWhat brand am I wearing?\u201d before replying with, \u201cYeah. That one.\u201d<\/p>\n The video is captioned \u201cSyd for short,\u201d a play on Sweeney\u2019s nickname.<\/p>\n Many commenters praised the video. One person wrote: \u201cGlad to see AE didn\u2019t bend the knee to the haters. You look fabulous, Sydney!\u201d Another added: \u201cI looove how you [sic] just trolling that haters.\u201d A third noted that Sweeney is \u201cnot just gorgeous, but smart.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI’d never even heard of her before these ads came out and now she’s everywhere,\u201d they commented.<\/p>\n Sweeney\u2019s previous American Eagle campaign dropped in July 2025, to significant backlash. In one ad from the campaign<\/a>, evocative of Brooke Shields\u2019 controversial 1980 Calvin Klein commercial<\/a>, Sweeney pulls on a pair of pants as she says, \u201cGenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.\u201d A voiceover then says, \u201cSydney Sweeney has great jeans.\u201d<\/p>\n The video was criticized by some for promoting genetic superiority<\/a>. Others hit back at the claims, alleging the ad was just a pun<\/a> \u2014 not a secret dogwhistle for white supremacists.<\/p>\n President Trump praised Sweeney\u2019s \u201cgood jeans\u201d video online: \u201cSydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the \u2018HOTTEST\u2019 ad out there. It\u2019s for American Eagle, and the jeans are \u2018flying off the shelves,\u2019\u201d he wrote in a Truth Social post<\/a> in August 2025. \u201cGo get \u2019em Sydney!\u201d<\/p>\n Sweeney did not immediately respond to the backlash. In an interview with GQ<\/a> in November 2025, when asked about the ad\u2019s divisiveness, the star of The Housemaid<\/em> told the reporter: \u201cI mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I\u2019m in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n In December 2025, she further explained her stance to People<\/a>. \u201cI was honestly surprised by the reaction,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren\u2019t true. Anyone who knows me knows that I\u2019m always trying to bring people together. I\u2019m against hate and divisiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n Sweeney is currently making waves for a very different outfit she wears in the third-season premiere of Euphoria<\/em><\/a>. <\/em>In the episode, which premiered on April 12, her character, Cassie, dresses as a dog \u2014 complete with a corset, dog ears and a tail \u2014 to create social media content she hopes will help her pay for her upcoming wedding to Nate (Jacob Elordi).
