Why the \u2018Spaceballs\u2019 Sequel Title Is Brilliant<\/span>Amazon MGM Studios<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n The search for more money awakens. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Amazon MGM revealed its slate of upcoming movies headed to theaters, chief among them the long-gestating Spaceballs<\/em> sequel<\/a>. Some ten months after the project was announced, a new pre-taped video presentation featured comedy sage Mel Brooks<\/a>, who personally revealed the title of the movie\u2014and explained why it isn\u2019t the one you thought it would be.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s me, Mel Brooks! I have a major announcement,\u201d Brooks says in the video. \u201cSpaceballs 2: The Search for More Money <\/em>is not going to be the title of this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n In a note-perfect explanation, Brooks says that he already found the money. \u201cThere it is,\u201d he says, with the camera zooming in on a duffel bag stuffed with cash. (Which, of course, is labeled \u201cSpaceballs: The Money.\u201d) \u201cIt was in my basement!\u201d<\/p>\n Still, the writer\/director says he\u2019s been hounded for years for more Spaceballs<\/em>. \u201cWell, we did it. And the title is: Spaceballs: The New One<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s just like the old one, but newer\u201d he says,.\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s called The New One<\/em>. There you have it. I\u2019ll see you at the movies! And may the Schwartz be with you.\u201d<\/p>\n It was 40 long years ago when Spaceballs<\/em> roasted Star Wars<\/em><\/a>, Star Trek<\/em>, Alien<\/em><\/a>, and other \u201880s sci-fi to bits and became a comedy classic in its own right. Sure, it\u2019s a bit of a missed opportunity for Brooks to not deliver on a joke teed up four decades ago<\/a>. But Spaceballs: The New One<\/em> is honestly the perfect title. The movie isn\u2019t just poking fun at new sci-fi like Avatar<\/em>, but nostalgia-driven legacy sequels, reboots, and remakes with generic titles. The New One<\/em> says what it is on the tin can. It\u2019s what your dad and uncle were literally going to call it at Thanksgiving. It\u2019s a brilliant joke only Brooks and company would cook up.<\/p>\n
