The Duchess of Edinburgh has called for an end to an ongoing war
\nwhich has left millions of people in need of humanitarian
\nsupport.<\/p>\n

Sophie joined an event in London focused on the impact of the
\nconflict in Sudan which has seen 30 million people need aid.<\/p>\n

The roundtable, organised by global children\u2019s charity Plan
\nInternational<\/a> UK, took place on the third anniversary of the
\nwar starting.<\/p>\n

And as she spoke at the event, the Duchess, who is patron of
\nPlan, said \u201dSudan is reaping the most horrendous human cost on
\nthe planet.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

The Duchess, who has visited the Chad\/ Sudan border in 2024,
\ntook part in the discussions which were designed to give a voice to
\nthe Sudanese people. Sophie heard first hand experiences of the
\nconflict and the impact it is having on girls. It is estimated that
\naround 12 million people in Sudan are at risk of gender based
\nviolence. Many girls are losing access to education while the risks
\nof displacement and violence continue.<\/p>\n

As she spoke, Sophie reflected on her own conversations with
\nthose impacted. She said \u201dI\u2019ve\u00a0had the
\nprivilege\u00a0of\u00a0speaking\u00a0to women\u00a0impacted\u00a0by
\nconflicts from all over the world \u2013 but the stories from Sudan
\nare\u00a0the most harrowing I have ever heard. No human should ever
\nhave to\u00a0encounter\u00a0such devastation\u00a0and
\nviolence.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

And she made a promise, adding \u201dwe must not forget about
\nSudan and I will keep raising my voice where and when I
\ncan.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The conflict in Sudan began in April 2023 when a power struggle
\nbegan between the country\u2019s army and a paramilitary group called
\nthe Rapid Support Forces. In 2019, the two forces had worked
\ntogether to oust Omar al-Bashir, Sudan\u2019s then ruler. A civilian led
\ngovernment followed but it was replaced in 2021 when the military
\ntook power.<\/p>\n

However, the leader of the armed forces, General Abdel Fattah
\nal-Burhan, and the leader of the RSF, General Mohamed Hamdan
\nDagalo, began to disagree and in 2023, fighting broke out after
\nmembers of the RSF were moved around Sudan in a gesture that the
\narmy saw as a threat. The fighting has led to tens of thousands of
\ndeaths. The United Nations has described the flight of millions
\nfrom the country and the plight of those left behind as the world\u2019s
\nlargest humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n

During the roundtable, guests were asked to write a message of
\nsolidarity for the people in Sudan and place it on a reflection
\ntree. Sophie\u2019s note read \u201dpeace is the only option. The people
\nof Sudan are not forgotten\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

The CEO of Plan International, Rose Caldwell, said \u201dAs we
\nmark three years since the start of the conflict, millions of
\nchildren \u2013 especially girls \u2013 continue to face immense challenges,
\nfrom disrupted education to increased risk of violence. Despite the
\nscale of this crisis, it\u00a0remains\u00a0critically underreported
\nand underfunded.<\/em> We are honoured by The Duchess of
\nEdinburgh\u2019s continued support in helping to shine a light on Sudan
\nand amplify the voices of young people calling for
\nchange.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

The Duchess of Edinburgh spoke to many of those present about
\ntheir own experiences and then wrote her own powerful message for
\nthe reflection tree.<\/p>\n
