The statement, which was shared on the official City of London website, read: &#8220;Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the Freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a Freeman and constitutes a legal right.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Applications via patrimony are not considered or endorsed by our elected Members, and there is no effective legal mechanism to remove this type of Freedom.&#8221; It continued: &#8220;Elected Members have today agreed to write to Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, inviting him to formally relinquish the Freedom. They will consider the response received, if any, at a future meeting and determine what action may be taken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Andrew, 66, received the honour by &#8216;virtue of patrimony&#8217; in 2012, because his late father, Prince Philip, was formerly a freeman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The organisation, which manages the so-called Square Mile, previously investigated whether it could strip Andrew of the title.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>However, the council later determined that the historic honour could not be removed because of his right to inherit it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But now, the City of London Corporation has called on Andrew to relinquish the honour amid his links to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Following his brother&#8217;s connection to the late paedophile, King Charles began the formal process to strip Andrew of his royal titles and honours after intensified scrutiny last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Andrew was arrested on his 66th birthday in February on suspicion of misconduct in a public office.
