Try polarizing, at best.<\/p>\n When the film wasn\u2019t being hailed as a brilliant, visionary, or a biting comical take on the absurdity of Cold War nuclear annihilation<\/strong>, it was being criticized as a \u201cdangerous<\/a>,\u201d \u201ca shattering sick joke<\/a>,\u201d and an \u201cevil thing about an evil thing<\/a>.\u201d Audiences, however, applauded the cynicism and pitch-black humor, and flocked to theaters to the cha-ching of nearly $10 million against a $2 million budget.<\/p>\n Adapted from the thriller novel Red Alert<\/em>, by Peter George<\/strong>, Dr. Strangelove<\/em> flips the narrative on its axis, \u201cexposing [the military-industrial complex\u2019s] hypocrisies and insecurities in a beautifully dark way,\u201d Far Out Magazine<\/strong><\/a><\/em> writes. Initially approaching the film as a serious take on nuclear war, Kubrick soon realized\u00a0the magic was in the farce.<\/p>\n \u201cIt occurred to me that I was approaching the project in the wrong way,\u201d Kubrick said in a 1970 interview<\/a>. \u201cThe only way to tell the story was as a black comedy or, better, a nightmare comedy, where the things you laugh at most are really the heart of the paradoxical postures that make a nuclear war possible.\u201d<\/p>\n Today, Dr. Strangelove<\/em> is widely considered not just the best dark comedy, but one of the best films ever made.
