This week, we\u2019re starting off with some news about petitions. We are\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbd.com\/news\/warner-bros-discovery-sets-shareholder-meeting-date-april-23-2026-approve-transaction\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less than a week away from the meeting where Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders will vote on the merger with Paramount Skydance\u00a0<\/a>(I feel like I\u2019m watching \u201cSuccession\u201d again), and many in Hollywood are sending up a last-minute plea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over 3,000 Hollywood industry professionals, including Florence Pugh, Ben Stiller, and Jane Fonda,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockthemerger.com\/openletter\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have signed an open letter opposing the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger.<\/a>\u00a0Paramount responded to the letter, maintaining its oft-repeated promise that it will release 30+ feature films a year, all with theatrical releases (I\u2019ll believe it when I see it, but I\u2019m guessing I won\u2019t).<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if this will have any measurable effect on what ends up happening with the merger \u2013 celebrities sign open letters all the time \u2013 but there are some interesting wrinkles here. Multiple people who signed the letter, including J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, have deals with Warner Bros.\/HBO. Will the threat of losing that talent have any effect? I\u2019m skeptical, but I guess we\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIDE NOTE:<\/strong>\u00a0At the Oscars, Jane Fonda\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/florence-pugh-pedro-pascal-paramount-warner-bros-merger-open-letter-1236721627\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said this of the possible merger and its effect on celebrity.land:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI mean, I slept with a guy who created it [Ted Turner]! Billionaires\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u2615 In 1989, Mark Mori screened his documentary \u201cBuilding Bombs,\u201d which he co-directed with Susan Robinson, at\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vasulka.org\/archive\/Tools\/show-fest3\/Atlanta\/poster%2789.pdf\">what was then called the Atlanta Film &amp; Video Festival<\/a>. Now, 37 years later, he has a new film playing at the 50th Atlanta Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The Georgia State University grad\u2019s new film is called \u201cBaristas v. Billionaires,\u201d a documentary that chronicles\u00a0the struggles of Starbucks baristas as they try to unionize against a company that seems determined to fight them every step of the way.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/atlff26.eventive.org\/films\/69c169b54f7fcd759d944b0d\">The film will play at the festival on April 28 at the Tara \u2018Step-Friend\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\ud83d\udcfa Sometimes, it feels like Marissa Read and Selyna Warren share the same brain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I interviewed the writing partners, whose project \u201cStep-Friend\u201d will be playing in the Episodic section of this year\u2019s Atlanta Film Festival, that fact became more apparent than ever. They often finish each other\u2019s sentences, or say the same thing at the same time. It\u2019s the kind of chemistry that only years of working closely together can bring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStep-Friend,\u201d which was written and directed by both Read and Warren, is the pilot of what the duo hopes will become a series. It features a nostalgic multicam sitcom format (think \u201cFull House\u201d) and follows the strained relationship between Scout (Read) and her best friend Darby (Warren) after Darby marries Scout\u2019s dad, Vince (Jim O\u2019Heir). Our protagonist, Lori Butler (Michaela Coel), is sitting on a bench, sketching the building across from her. She\u2019s passing time (she works at the Chinese food truck parked next to the bench), and a completed sketch of the same building already sits on one side of her notebook, as she works on a second identical sketch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We won\u2019t really question what Lori is doing until later, but as the film goes on, you start to wonder \u2013 was she sketching the building in front of her, or was she trying to copy the sketch on the other page? We\u2019ve been conditioned to understand a difference between those two things, but why? Why does that really matter?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Christophers,\u201d directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Ed Solomon, is filled with moments like this one \u2013 seemingly inconsequential at first glance, but raising larger questions about the nature of art. Why do we value the sketch of the building more than the sketch of the sketch? What gives art its importance? Is it originality?
