He was 73.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedcode\">\n<div class=\"keypointsbox\" style=\"text-align: left; width: 95%;\">\n<hr style=\"height: 2px; border-width: 0; background-color: #042d4d;\"\/>\n<h4 style=\"text-indent: 10px;\"><b>What You Need To Know<\/b><\/h4>\n<h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Country music songwriter Don Schlitz died Thursday at a Nashville hospital at 73<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>He was known for hits such as Kenny Rogers&#8217; \u201cThe Gambler\u201d and Randy Travis&#8217; \u201cOn the Other Hand\u201d and\u00a0\u201cForever and Ever, Amen\u201d<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Schlitz, a North Carolina native, was born in 1952 and raised in Durham before moving to Nashville<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>He was a two-time\u00a0Grammy Award winner and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/h5>\n<hr style=\"height: 2px; border-width: 0; background-color: #042d4d;\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"remove-embeded\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The cause of death was not immediately known. A news release from the Grand Ole Opry described it as a sudden illness.<\/p>\n<p>The two-time\u00a0Grammy Award winner\u00a0was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will never be able to believe that I deserve this, unless I receive it as a representative of my family, my mentors, my collaborators, my promoters and my friends,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/arts-and-entertainment-382a254431ba4d47931f69e62fd02fbf\" target=\"_blank\">Schlitz said<\/a>\u00a0in 2017, when he learned of the Country Music Hall of Fame honor. \u201cThat\u2019s the only way I can deal with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schlitz made his\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-chris-young-vince-gill-music-936be52ddfb9e30bee3ab14f530607df\" target=\"_blank\">Grand Ole Opry<\/a>\u00a0debut in 2017 and was inducted in 2022. He is the only non-artist to receive the honor in the Opry\u2019s 100 years. The historic venue&#8217;s Saturday night show will be dedicated in his honor.<\/p>\n<p>He was named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year for four consecutive years, from 1988 through 1991. He also wrote music and lyrics for \u201cThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer,\u201d the 1999 Broadway musical.<\/p>\n<p>Schlitz&#8217;s songs have been recorded by such hitmakers as\u00a0Kenny Rogers\u00a0(\u201cThe Gambler,\u201d \u201cThe Greatest\u201d),\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/randy-travis-artificial-intelligence-song-voice-589a8c142f70ed8ccf53af6d32c662dc\" target=\"_blank\">Randy Travis<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cOn the Other Hand,\u201d \u201cForever and Ever, Amen\u201d), The Judds (\u201cI Know Where I\u2019m Going\u201d), The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (\u201cI Love Only You\u201d), Tanya Tucker (\u201cI Won\u2019t Take Less Than Your Love\u201d), Mary Chapin Carpenter (\u201cHe Thinks He\u2019ll Keep Her\u201d) and many others.<\/p>\n<p>He also wrote \u201cYou Can\u2019t Make Old Friends\u201d for Rogers and Dolly Parton, their first duet since 1983&#8217;s \u201cIslands in the Stream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schlitz, a North Carolina native, was born in 1952 and raised in Durham before packing his bags and heading to Nashville. His first recorded song, \u201cThe Gambler,\u201d is perhaps his most enduring hit and the tent pole of his legacy. The song, which was recorded by Rogers in 1978 and certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, opened doors for country music in the &#8217;70s. It was not only a huge genre hit but also a pop crossover.<\/p>\n<p>As Rogers said when he inducted Schlitz into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012, \u201cDon doesn\u2019t just write songs. He writes careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are heartbroken by the news of the passing of Don Schlitz. Don loved his family, his home state of North Carolina, and above all, songs and songwriters. He carried that love into every room, every stage and every lyric he ever wrote,\u201d Sarah Trahern, Country Music Association CEO, wrote in a statement Friday. \u201cNot long ago, we shared a dinner, and as we were leaving, Don picked up a guitar and began to play. That is how I will always remember him, smiling and with a guitar in his hand. His legacy lives on through his music and the many artists and writers he inspired.
