{"id":2379643,"date":"2026-04-19T06:15:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T06:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2379643"},"modified":"2026-04-19T06:15:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T06:15:21","slug":"the-late-queen-was-a-nightmare-to-paint-for-a-reason-youll-never-ex-royal-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/the-late-queen-was-a-nightmare-to-paint-for-a-reason-youll-never-ex-royal-news\/","title":{"rendered":"The late Queen was a nightmare to paint &#8211; for a reason you&#8217;ll never ex | Royal | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The official artist for the coronation of the late Queen told his son she was a nightmare to capture on canvas &#8211; because she was such a chatterbox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The revelation comes in a special episode of Antiques Roadshow on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/bbc\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\">BBC<\/a> One tonight, marking what would have been Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s 100th birthday on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Host Fiona Bruce and her team meet a selection of people with special memorabilia and memories about Her Majesty, who died aged 96 in September 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>One such guest is Andrew Viner whose late grandfather was prolific English painter Terence Cuneo, who passed away in 1996 aged 88.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Despite being noted for his pictures of railways, horses and military scenes, he was commissioned to do a portrait of the Queen at her coronation at Westminster Abbey in June 1953.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Viewers will tonight see Andrew display some early sketches Terence did of her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>And he reveals she proved something of a headache to paint, as she would not sit still.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He says: \u201cThe first time he painted the late Queen was for a Lloyds\u2019 commission. It was for the laying of the foundation stone for the new Lloyds\u2019 building.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI did ask him once, \u2019what was the Queen like as a sitter?\u2019 and he said, \u2018terrible, because she just talked!\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWhen I posed for him I would get bored and if I said anything I was told to \u2018dry up\u2019, but I don\u2019t imagine he did that with the Queen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Terence\u2019s huge coronation portrait, which measures 11ft by 8ft, now hangs proudly in Buckingham Palace.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Andrew adds: \u201cIt took him a year to complete and it was presented to the Queen at Lancaster House by the Lord Lieutenants at a dinner which my grandfather attended.
