The Indigo Girls announced that singer Emily Saliers has been diagnosed with two movement disorders, both of which impact her ability to sing.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately there\u2019s no cure for these, so the honest fact is that my voice will not be what it was,\u201d Saliers said in an emotional video recorded with Amy Ray and posted Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe needed to make y\u2019all aware of something,\u201d Saliers said in the clip. \u201cTo those of you in our community who have supported us all these years, we\u2019re so grateful for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also explained the video was recorded in Atlanta, where she and Ray have been practicting in preparation for their next tour.<\/p>\n
In an effort to be \u201ccompletely forthcoming,\u201d Saliers continued, she wanted to make the video to explain what\u2019s happened to her voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe all of you have noticed, it\u2019s pretty noticeable, that my voice is not what it once was,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, I wanted to share with you that I\u2019ve been diagnosed with two movement disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n
One, cervical dystonia<\/a>, which is also known as spasmodic torticollis, can cause neck muscles to contract involuntarily. Salier said this makes it \u201cimpossible\u201d for her to center her head without shaking.<\/p>\n The tremor makes it impossible for her to make \u201cconnections, muscularly, and structurally.\u201d As a result, \u201cI am completely physically unable to hold a straight tone the way I used to.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cUnfortunately there\u2019s no cure for these, so the honest fact is that my voice will not be what it was,\u201d she also said. The pair added they will be joined by Lucy Wainwright Roche on the road, who will assist with some songs.<\/p>\n \u201cI just hope that you can have some grace with my struggles for this particular touring year,\u201d Saliers added. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna work hard to make it good.
