King Charles was greeted by Sir Keir Starmer just moments after
\nthe Prime Minister found his actions under intense scrutiny in a
\nSelect Committee meeting.<\/p>\n
The King and the PM met at the British Museum to see final plans
\nfor a national memorial to Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have
\nbeen her 100th birthday.<\/p>\n
Charles III had already spoken movingly of his late mother as
\nthe centenary got under way.<\/p>\n
However, by the time he met Sir Keir at the British Museum,
\nminds had turned elsewhere after the evidence of Sir Olly Robbins,
\nformerly top civil servant at the Foreign Office, to a Select
\nCommittee. He was grilled by MPs over the vetting of Peter
\nMandelson as US ambassador and said that Downing Street had a \u201dvery
\nstrong expectation\u201d that their pick would be cleared.<\/p>\n
Peter Mandelson was revealed to have extensive links with
\nconvicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, in the Epstein files that
\nwere released earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Sir Olly Robbins also said that Number 10 had lobbied for
\nanother close associate, Matthew Doyle, to be given a diplomatic
\nposting. Matthew Doyle was later suspended from the Labour Party
\nfor links to a convicted paedophile.<\/p>\n
Sir Keir arrived at the British Museum for the long planned
\ncentenary event as the Lib Dem leader, Sir Ed Davey, described the
\nevidence as \u201dincredibly damning\u201d for the PM.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister was at the museum to view the final plans for
\nthe national memorial to Elizabeth II which will stand in St.
\nJames\u2019 Park. It includes a new statue of her, wearing Garter robes,
\ncreated by Martin Jennings. He will also create a statue of Prince
\nPhilip which will stand nearby.<\/p>\n
The memorial will also feature a glass cast bridge designed to
\nmatch the tiara that Elizabeth II wore at her wedding to Prince
\nPhilip. The Queen Mary fringe tiara is echoed in the constant
\nstring of glass lines that make up the bridge.<\/p>\n
King Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by the Duke and
\nDuchess of Edinburgh for the event as well as the Duke and Duchess
\nof Gloucester.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Princess Royal was in Regent\u2019s Park to formally
\nopen the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Garden.<\/p>\n
Later on the anniversary, The King and Queen were set to welcome
\ncentenarians to Buckingham Palace for a celebratory tea party
\nmarking 100 years since the birth of Queen Elizabeth II.<\/p>\n
