During taping of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills<\/i>, it wasn\u2019t uncommon for Lisa Rinna\u2019s husband, Harry Hamlin, to consult his copy of the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). He was looking for the \u201cpersonality disorder\u201d that best captured the latest pathology Rinna reported from her mercurial castmates.<\/p>\n

The fiery reality TV star, known for her \u201ciconic\u201d hairstyle and forthright personality, wields these labels and other barbs in her new book, You Better Believe I\u2019m Gonna Talk About It<\/i>. Like most celebrity memoirs of this mould, her breezy, conversational exercise serves plenty of dish, a bit of venom and some tough lessons from the coalface of reality TV\u2019s most popular franchise.<\/p>\n

Take former Real Housewives<\/i> colleagues Denise Richards and Garcelle Beauvais: both are given the moniker \u201cfull-blown narcissist\u201d, with Rinna self-appointed as the \u201cNarcissist Hunter of Beverly Hills\u201d. Assessments of other celebrities encountered are less clinical: Dionne Warwick is a \u201cnasty piece of work\u201d, Star Jones a \u201ctwat\u201d, Melania Trump simply a \u201crobot\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rinna\u2019s memoir, which also covers ageing in the public eye, grief and parenting, is an attempt for the 62-year-old to reclaim her \u201cnarrative\u201d, one she claims she lost during her final year on Real Housewives<\/i> that reframed her as the show\u2019s \u201cvillain\u201d.<\/p>\n

During that period, Rinna raged at co-stars on-camera and ranted online about fashion houses and Donald Trump. Such histrionics, she now says, were fuelled by unresolved grief at her mother\u2019s death and anger at the apathy of both the network and her castmates. \u201cI had so much repressed anger from my mother\u2019s death then \u2026 I really lost my mind,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n

But before Rinna enjoyed the public spotlight thanks to her eight-year-run on Real Housewives<\/i>, she was \u201chustling\u201d everywhere: carving out a career in soap operas Days of Our Lives <\/i>and Melrose Place<\/i>, attracting controversy by appearing pregnant in Playboy <\/i>magazine, spruiking incontinence briefs in TV commercials and hawking women\u2019s clothing on home-shopping network QVC.<\/p>\n

But reality TV, a \u201cblood sport\u201d according to Rinna, is where the actress solidified her public image and became one of the genre\u2019s more popular \u2013 and polarising \u2013 figures. During her time on Real Housewives<\/i>, she regularly fought with peers including Kim Richards (almost choking the actress at one point), once suggested an ill co-star was suffering from Munchausen syndrome (and not Lyme disease) and questioned if another star was doing cocaine off-camera.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rinna\u2019s retelling of her family\u2019s many trials is where the memoir holds its emotional heft. There is her father\u2019s decision to pursue assisted dying alongside her mother\u2019s inspiring resilience, one borne after surviving a near-fatal attack by a serial killer. In July 1960, Rinna\u2019s mother was bashed in the head with a hammer by David Carpenter (the \u201cTrailside Killer\u201d) but rescued from death by a police officer on patrol. (Carpenter raped and murdered many women across San Francisco a decade later.)<\/p>\n

Rinna\u2019s husband, Hamlin, meanwhile, has been alleged to be a \u201ccloset case\u201d, a claim fuelled by his \u201cbrave\u201d decision to appear as an openly gay man in the 1982 movie Making Love<\/i>, about a man coming to terms with his sexuality. To put the \u201cgay rumour\u201d to rest, however, Rinna writes: \u201cHarry\u2019s heterosexual. He is not a gay man in any way, shape or form.\u201d<\/p>\n

After now escaping the \u201cgangsters\u201d running Real Housewives<\/i>, Rinna is now enjoying a \u201cRinnaissance\u201d, a rare feat for a woman in her 60s in the entertainment world. High-end fashion designers have booked her to appear in Paris runway shows, several dramatic movie roles have arrived and she has even become the public\u2019s darling again with a popular appearance on The Traitors<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Her brazen \u2013 and now bestselling (in the US) book \u2013 memoir has also helped rebalance the scales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You Better Believe I\u2019m Gonna Talk About It <\/i>captures the firebrand housewife at her most delectable: shameless, unapologetic and simply \u201cowning it\u201d. \u201cBravo is the casino, we\u2019re the players and the house always wins,\u201d she writes. With this self-critical and frank project, Rinna recoups more than lost earnings \u2013 she now gets part of her story back.<\/p>\n
