Now, at 50, the Spice Girl has a singular fan. That she carries with her everywhere. To manage her hot flashes.<\/p>\n<p>Before she learned it was menopause that was causing her sudden onset night sweats, brain fog, anxiety and vaginal dryness, the pop music royal (and her \u201cquite a few years younger\u201d husband) wondered if she might just be \u201closing her marbles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d be talking, I\u2019d lose my train of thought,\u201d Mel, whose full name is Melanie Janine Brown, tells The Post. \u201cI\u2019d go into a room and think, \u2018What have I come into this room for?\u2019 And it was starting to really annoy me. I was starting to get quite worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Mel B, also known as Scary Spice or her full name, Melanie Janine Brown, was a founding member of the Spice Girls in 1994. The mom of three turns 51 this year. <span class=\"credit\">Zoe McConnell<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She figured maybe someday down the line menopause would find her, but she didn\u2019t know it was something practically all women will experience by their late 40s or early 50s, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/swhr.org\/health_focus_area\/menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">per the Society for Women\u2019s Health Research (SWHR)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She attributes her ignorance to a culture that muzzles discussion of experiences that are nearly universal for girls and women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was taboo. [\u2026] I don\u2019t think that\u2019s fair on women, because it\u2019s not like, oh, 25% of women are gonna go [through it] \u2014 no, 100% of women, and apart from that odd few, you\u2019re gonna go through it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each day in the US, roughly 6,000 women reach menopause, according to SWHR, which is typically marked by the one-year anniversary of the last menstrual period and results in a major decrease in estrogen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why are we not talking about it? Why are our doctors not educated more?\u201d Brown asks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>When she finally put the symptoms together, she wanted to know she wasn\u2019t alone. But as the old saying goes: Friendship never ends \u2014 not even for menopause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, well, does anybody else have it?\u2019 And [I] find out all the Spice Girls have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to taking care of her health during this stage of life, Brown has several new priorities. It\u2019s brilliant.\u201d She liked it so much, she says, she gave testers to the other Spice Girls.<\/p>\n<p>But her menopausal self-care doesn\u2019t stop there. At the gym, she\u2019s prioritizing more weight-training over cardio, \u201cbecause as you get older, our bone density needs that extra help.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Brown is an ambassador for Revive Collagen\u2019s Menopause Max collagen supplements. <span class=\"credit\">Zoe McConnell<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/20\/health\/why-this-68-year-old-started-powerlifting-after-a-bike-accident\/\">Strength training becomes especially important as women age<\/a>, because building muscle can help prevent osteoporosis and bone loss, and assist the metabolism when it otherwise starts to slow down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brown is also transforming her relationship to sleep \u2014 in that she\u2019s finally trying to get some.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>She\u2019s committing to six hours per night, she says, a real upgrade from before when she was regularly getting closer to three or four.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, I\u2019ve got three kids,\u201d she explains, and there were times when she was \u201cup every four hours feeding the baby.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that was the norm. \u2018Oh, I can survive on minimal sleep.\u2019 Actually, no, you can\u2019t, especially when you go into the menopause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Menopause and perimenopause \u2014 the time before menopause when hormones start to dysregulate \u2014 are infamous disruptors of sleep.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not only do they bring about hot flashes that wake sufferers up in pools of sweat, but the drop in estrogen and progesterone can also lead to the development of certain sleep disorders like sleep apnea, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/how-does-menopause-affect-my-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Johns Hopkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And lastly, Brown is working on building pride \u2014 hers and others\u2019 \u2014 around this lifestage that so often gets hushed and overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to have a sign on your face saying \u2018I\u2019m going through the menopause,\u2019\u201d she says.
