This recent coverage includes reviews of two new books about the enigmatic singer-songwriter who turns 85 on May 24: Robert Polito\u2019s \u201cAfter the Flood: Inside Bob Dylan\u2019s Memory Palace\u201d and Jim Windolf\u2019s \u201cWhere the Music Had to Go: How Bob Dylan and the Beatles Changed Each Other \u2014 and the World.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Polito\u2019s \u201cAfter the Flood\u201d makes the case that the past 30 years of Dylan\u2019s career have been as significant to his catalog as the 1960s and \u201970s. Those earlier decades saw him writing and recording \u201cBlowin\u2019 in the Wind,\u201d \u201cMasters of War,\u201d \u201cThe Times They Are A-Changing,\u201d \u201cMr. Tambourine Man,\u201d \u201cKnockin\u2019 on Heaven\u2019s Door\u201d and more future classics.<\/p>\n

Polito\u2019s book highlights such later Dylan albums as 1997\u2019s \u201cTime Out of Mind,\u201d 2001\u2019s \u201cLove and Theft\u201d and his masterful 2020 opus, \u201cRough and Rowdy Ways.\u201d The book also cites the considerable touring Dylan has done since 1988, aka the \u201cNever Ending Tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

The other new Dylan book, Windolf\u2019s \u201cWhere the Music Had to Go,\u201d chronicles Dylan\u2019s relationship with his 1960s peers, the Beatles. Friendly rivals, they influenced and inspired each other. Initially dismissive, Paul McCartney found himself enraptured by Dylan\u2019s first two albums during the Beatles\u2019 extended engagement in Paris in January 1964, just weeks before Beatlemania struck the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the rest of our three weeks in Paris we didn\u2019t stop playing them,\u201d John Lennon said of those Dylan records.<\/p>\n

In his 2021 book, \u201cThe Lyrics,\u201d McCartney reveals the impact Dylan made on the Lennon-McCartney songwriting team: \u201cIn the earliest days we were writing like Buddy Holly. Then we were writing like Motown. Then we were writing like Bob Dylan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dylan later grew especially close to George Harrison, who recorded the Dylan song \u201cIf Not for You\u201d for his 1970 solo album debut. Nearly 20 years later, ex-Beatle Harrison joined Dylan in the supergroup Traveling Wilburys. And 22 years after Lennon\u2019s death in 1980, Dylan released a tribute to him, \u201cRoll on John.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dylan\u2019s 2026 performances in Louisiana are part of his yearslong \u201cRough and Rowdy Ways\u201d worldwide tour. Many of the shows on its latest leg are in smaller venues in places like Saginaw, Michigan; La Crosse, Wisconsin; Muncie, Indiana; and Waukegan, Illinois.<\/p>\n

In a review of Dylan\u2019s March 30 performance in Waukegan, Chicago Tribune writer Christopher Borrelli describes the evening\u2019s inscrutable main attraction as \u201ca Flying Wallenda, pulling arrangements out of shape, not looking down to see just how precarious all of this sounds, as his excellent four-piece band turns toward him, carefully watching his footing. It\u2019s also just a weirdly cozy image for a famously caustic legend.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Waukegan show\u2019s set list included Dylan\u2019s take on songs by some of his rock \u2019n\u2019 roll heroes (Bo Diddley\u2019s \u201cI Can Tell\u201d and Eddie Cochran\u2019s \u201cNervous Breakdown\u201d); his recasting of his own classics; and \u201cRough and Rowdy Ways\u201d songs.<\/p>\n

Initially seen as a folk singer, Dylan was canonized by the early \u201960s folk music scene. Those early years are depicted in the eight-time Oscar-nominated 2024 Dylan biopic, \u201cA Complete Unknown.\u201d The film follows him from his 1961 arrival in New York City to the electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival that enraged folk music purists.<\/p>\n

In 2016, Dylan became the first musician to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. He chose not to accept his prize in person. The U.S. ambassador to Sweden, Azita Raji, read his acceptance speech at the gala Nobel Banquet in Stockholm City Hall. An excerpt is below:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
