Ma Fest<\/a>, paying homage to the \u201crich cultural traditions of the South\u201d and named after Columbus native Gertrude \u201cMa\u201d Rainey<\/a>, known as the \u201cMother of the Blues,\u201d will take place this Saturday from 4-9 p.m., according to a news release from the Columbus Consolidated Government.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The news release says the event will be at the Historic Liberty Theatre & Cultural Arts Center<\/a> and will be an outdoor celebration with food, live entertainment, vendors and \u201ccommunity pride.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rainey was born in Columbus in April 1886. She signed a recording contract with Paramount and recorded music with other artists, including Louis Armstrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlues, BBQ and Jazz will be heavily embedded throughout the experience, creating a soulful soundtrack and flavor that pays homage to the rich cultural traditions of the South,\u201d the news release says.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe festival will transform the surrounding streets into a high-energy, front porch-themed celebration infused with block party spirit and Black Wall Street inspired vibrancy,\u201d the news release says.<\/p>\n

The festival will feature live jazz performances, blues tributes, historical reenactments, local artisans, barbecue food vendors, creative installations and more, according to the news release.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa Fest is more than a festival, it is a movement to celebrate legacy, empower creativity, and build economic & cultural momentum for Columbus,\u201d the news release says.<\/p>\n
