The project will be built on a strong, community-shared history that honors the Royals\u2019 past and looks to the future, he said.<\/p>\n<p>During a 10 a.m. news conference at the American Restaurant in Crown Center, Sherman said it was a day to be marked in history, when baseball was being brought to the city\u2019s center. Mayor Quinton Lucas and Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe joined Sherman and Don Hall, Hallmark\u2019s chairman of the board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Quoting President Harry Truman (\u201cMake no little plans\u201d), Sherman said the development will ultimately be a $3 billion project with an innovative partnership with Hallmark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no script for what we\u2019re sharing with you today, no playbook, no blueprint,\u201d Sherman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kansas City Royals are staying in the state of Missouri, and we\u2019re staying in the city of Kansas City, Missouri,\u201d he said to applause. \u201cWe\u2019re bringing baseball downtown. We\u2019re bringing a second crown downtown,\u201d Sherman said in a reference to Hallmark\u2019s crown logo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article__content__body__image wp-block-image size-large extended\"><button class=\"article__content__body__image__expand-button image-expand\"><i class=\"fas fa-expand\"\/><i class=\"fas fa-compress\"\/><\/button><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Royals chairman John Sherman, right, with microphone, shows off a rendering of the proposed new Royals ballpark at Crown Center. Hall, the company\u2019s founder, first arrived in Kansas City 115 years ago, brought by what he had heard of the \u201cKansas City spirit.\u201d Hall compared Sherman to his grandfather, saying they both had the \u201cheart, resources and long-term vision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeparated by generations and in histories yet united by a shared belief in Kansas City\u2019s promise,\u201d Hall said. \u201cToday, those visions come together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStanding at this spot I can\u2019t help but reflect on the fact that my grandfather hopped off that train when he was 18 years old to build a business here only because he had heard people talking about the Kansas City spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucas said the project is structured as a public-private partnership that will rely on revenues generated by the team along with nearby development. The project will be built with no new taxes, no large special taxing districts, and will generate 20,000 construction jobs, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Royals are staying home, and they are building a new home at the center of our region\u2019s culture, arts, vibrance and entrepreneurial success,\u201d Lucas said. \u201cWe are the visionaries of today, and we are changing Kansas City for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone is on board with the project. The Missouri Workers, a nonprofit that advocates for low-wage workers, announced it would look at all legal and political options to force a public vote on the publicly financed project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pointing to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/politics-elections-and-government\/2024-04-02\/royals-chiefs-stadium-sales-tax-question-1-results-jackson-county-kansas-city-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the failed 2024 vote<\/a>\u00a0on the downtown ballpark, the group said Sherman\u2019s \u201cvanity project\u201d comes on the heels of state\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/politics-elections-and-government\/2026-04-22\/missouri-income-tax-sales-election-2026-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">lawmakers\u2019 approval of a vote<\/a>\u00a0this week on ending income tax and a move to sales taxes.
