Now approaching 20, its story extends well beyond songs. The company says it has &#8220;revolutionized music listening,&#8221; &#8220;brought <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/innovation\">innovation<\/a>&#8221; through podcasting, and that its 2022 move into audiobooks\u2014competing directly with Amazon and Audible\u2014was &#8220;the next leap.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Today, Spotify calls itself &#8220;the world&#8217;s most popular audio streaming subscription service,&#8221; offering over 100 million tracks, 7 million podcasts and 500,000 audiobooks, with 751 million users\u2014up 11 percent year-on-year. It also runs production studios, hosts awards, drives brand collaborations and generates annual <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/viral\">viral<\/a> momentum through &#8220;Wrapped.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Its 2025 AI-generated DJ added personalized radio to keep users inside its ever-expanding ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Spotify told <em>Newsweek<\/em> that 91 percent of users consider the platform essential to their daily routine. Now a global entertainment titan\u2014absent only in China, Iran, Cuba, Russia and a few other restricted markets\u2014Spotify has sustained legacies, launched careers and made household names across music, presenting, producing and content creation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\"><em>Newsweek <\/em>reviewed the platform&#8217;s defining numbers to learn what Spotify changed, who benefited most, and what comes next.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Heading_blockHeading__6ppY9\" style=\"background-color:inherit;color:inherit\">The Winners<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"Heading_blockHeading__6ppY9\" style=\"background-color:inherit;color:inherit\">Most Musicians, Duh<\/h3>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Taylor Swift\u2014Spotify&#8217;s most-streamed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/artist\">artist<\/a> and the first female to cross 100 million monthly listeners\u2014claimed 26.6 billion streams in 2024; Bad Bunny, the most-streamed male artist of all time, led globally from 2020 to 2022; Drake dominated the 2010s with 28 billion streams alongside that decade&#8217;s top female artist Ariana Grande, now of <em>Wicked <\/em>fame; and The Weeknd holds the most-streamed song record with &#8220;Blinding Lights&#8221; at over 5 billion streams, his Daft Punk collaboration &#8220;Star Boy&#8221; ranking fourth all-time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;Drake, Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, and Ariana Grande have creative fan experiences that contribute to growing their respective communities,&#8221; Ian &#8220;JY&#8221; Williams (@whoisjy), senior director of A&amp;R at Mnrk Music Group, told <em>Newsweek<\/em>. &#8220;Building community has always been key in the industry and now this strategy has become more popular than ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;They make highly addictive music,&#8221; Chuck Creekmur (@chuckcreekmur), CEO of @AllHipHopcom, told <em>Newswee<\/em>k. &#8220;Creating this addiction, in alignment with fan bases that want to see them victorious is key. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">&#8220;Most are masters of marketing and timing, playing the game globally\u2014with replay value, fanatical supporters, and an embrace of changing landscapes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Heading_blockHeading__6ppY9\" style=\"background-color:inherit;color:inherit\">International Artists<\/h3>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Spotify crosses borders at a speed radio never managed, propelling artists from diverse linguistic backgrounds to global popularity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">From Bad Bunny&#8217;s Spanish-speaking dominance to BTS and Blackpink, mainstream is increasingly multilingual\u201416 languages reached Spotify&#8217;s Global Top 50 in 2025, more than double 2020&#8217;s count<\/p>\n<div class=\"ImageBlock_container__ioAu0\">\n<div class=\"ImageBlock_imageContainer__OPxoe\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.6667%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The fastest-growing genres generating over $100 million in royalties were Brazilian funk, K-pop, urban Latino and reggaeton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Yet Spotify&#8217;s audience is unevenly distributed. In 2025, Spotify paid the music industry over $11 billion, bringing lifetime payouts to nearly $70 billion, up more than 10 percent year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Labels now benefit from subscription income, global distribution and infinite catalog shelf life.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Heading_blockHeading__6ppY9\" style=\"background-color:inherit;color:inherit\">Pop Culture Relevance<\/h3>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Spotify&#8217;s &#8220;Discover Weekly,&#8221; &#8220;Wrapped&#8221; and AI DJ have made personalized discovery and curation central to the platform experience. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Spotify&#8217;s 2025 &#8220;Wrapped&#8221; was the biggest in company history, with more than 300 million users engaging and over 630 million shares online.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Heading_blockHeading__6ppY9\" style=\"background-color:inherit;color:inherit\">The Losers<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"Heading_blockHeading__6ppY9\" style=\"background-color:inherit;color:inherit\">Does Spotify Make the Fame Gap Wider?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Streaming&#8217;s harshest critique is that 90 percent of streams go to the top 1 percent of artists, squeezing the middle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Still, Spotify&#8217;s distribution tools, playlist placement and &#8220;Fresh Finds&#8221; ecosystem\u2014where more than 1 in 10 artists earning over $100,000 were first playlisted\u2014support emerging talent. In 2023, over 200,000 independent artists earned more than $1,000, and 50,000 generated at least $10,000 from Spotify alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">By 2025, 13,800 artists generated at least $100,000\u2014nearly 1,400 more than the prior year.
