Community members, both kids and adults alike,\u00a0<\/span>lined<\/span>\u00a0the entrance of Susu\u2019s Popcorn and Candy Cafe on April\u00a0<\/span>13<\/span>\u00a0as they unveiled their new fudge and ice cream shop. Susu\u2019s Ice Cream and Fudge\u00a0<\/span>complete<\/span>\u00a0the already expansive selection of sweets offered downtown.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Susu\u2019s Popcorn and Candy Cafe\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0opened in March 2023 selling homemade popcorn flavors, sweets,\u00a0<\/span>drinks<\/span>\u00a0and candies. After finding success within the community of Nacogdoches, the\u00a0<\/span>Susu\u2019s family\u00a0<\/span>knew it was time to expand the vision of the shop.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c<\/span>I\u2019ve been coming here since my freshman year and I love their popcorn, so I\u2019m very excited that they open a new joint here so then there\u2019s more places to get a little sweet treat for your<\/span>self,<\/span>\u201d Carissa Garcia, an SFA student and junior theater major from Dallas, said. \u201cI\u2019ll love\u00a0<\/span>SuSu’s<\/span>\u00a0Popcorn therefore I’ll love\u00a0<\/span>SuSu\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0ice cream.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On opening day, the new fudge and ice cream parlor sold 12 different bluebell ice cream flavors and 17\u00a0<\/span>different flavors<\/span>\u00a0of homemade fudge with more to\u00a0<\/span>come<\/span>. Additionally, the store boasts small areas for patrons to sit and enjoy the\u00a0<\/span>atmosphere and<\/span>\u00a0strike up a conversation with the\u00a0<\/span>owners<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c<\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0always wanted to do fudge and ice cream. We ran out of money when we first\u00a0<\/span>opened<\/span>, and fudge is\u00a0<\/span>very expensive<\/span>. We finally got our fudge machine in and\u00a0<\/span>we\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0super excited as far as ice cream,\u201d Susan Sowards, part owner of the\u00a0<\/span>SuSu\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Popcorn and Candy Cafe said. \u201cIt’s very popular for popcorn and candy stores to have ice cream<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but for me, the smell is not\u00a0<\/span>compatible,<\/span>\u00a0so I\u2019ve always wanted to have two separate rooms.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The original store fronts had been built in the 1890\u2019s and had features that were over 100 years old. The\u00a0<\/span>Sowards<\/span>\u00a0took on the challenge replacing the electrical wiring of the building while still preserving the original floors, walls, and ceilings.\u00a0<\/span>In order to<\/span>\u00a0open the new shop, the So<\/span>wards<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>would have to\u00a0<\/span>start from scratch<\/span>\u00a0once again, facing different challenges than their first store.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen we walked in \u2026 there was this deterioration in the brick, well, long story short, it was a fireplace that had been covered up and so moisture was coming from the bottom up<\/span>\u2026<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all of that had to be redone and there was no way we would have known about th<\/span>at<\/span>,\u201d Sow<\/span>ard<\/span>s said.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of little challenges but it\u2019s also what makes it so incredibly fun and fascinating.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Susu\u2019s Popcorn has a dedicated customer base due to the Sow<\/span>ards<\/span>\u00a0themselves. The welcoming atmosphere of the store encourages people to come for the community, not the business itself. The business helps organizations in the community through donations,\u00a0<\/span>partnering for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fundraisers\u00a0<\/span>and school field trips.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThat’s one thing that\u2019s really important to us that everybody is welcome here,\u201d Sowards said.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe growth and the blessings and everything, we had this opportunity and\u00a0<\/span>that’s<\/span>\u00a0why\u00a0<\/span>we’re<\/span>\u00a0getting to do it.\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>have t<\/span>he opportunity to<\/span>\u00a0continue to serve our community<\/span>, and I love seeing people happy.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Susan is a\u00a0<\/span>part owner<\/span>\u00a0of her company alongside her husband, Alan, and her children. The Sowards<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0mission to give back to their community\u00a0<\/span>isn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>limited through their business. Susan and Alan are both former\u00a0<\/span>teachers<\/span>\u00a0among other things. Their roots run deep to Nacogdoches back\u00a0<\/span>when Alan was student and professor at SFA. They have a love for their community and an even stronger love for their family.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201c<\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0retired from three different\u00a0<\/span>things<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0realized that\u00a0<\/span>it’s<\/span>\u00a0not for me. Living my dream here, the joy would be gone if I\u00a0<\/span>didn’t<\/span>\u00a0have my family. I can tell that I\u00a0<\/span>wouldn’t<\/span>\u00a0want to do this by\u00a0<\/span>myself,<\/span>\u00a0and I\u00a0<\/span>don’t<\/span>\u00a0think Alan would want to either,\u201d Sowards said. \u201c<\/span>I hope I do this till the day I die.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
