Many of these people, it turns out, have secrets \u2014 including Tom himself, a single dad who has a way of looking desperately haunted on the rare occasions when he\u2019s alone.<\/p>\nTom\u2019s efforts to talk up the island are quickly successful \u2014 listen for Rhys\u2019 enchanting whoop of delight when a New York Times reporter compares Widow\u2019s Bay to Martha\u2019s Vineyard \u2014 and soon the place is teeming with tourists, despite its lack of Wi-Fi. But that doesn\u2019t stop strange events from occurring. Mysterious figures appear in the dark fog; ghostly sounds are heard in a historic (and thoroughly creepy) hotel; references are made to a horrific crime on the island a few decades ago whose effects still reverberate; and a pale, tangle-haired female wraith \u2014 \u201cthe hag,\u201d Wyck casually tells us \u2014 seems to be haunting Tom. All is not well in Widow\u2019s Bay, a place where ghosts, both real and psychological, seem to lurk in every corner.<\/p>\n
\u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d is at its best when it leans into character comedy, particularly in the early episodes. The town hall seems to be a place where time has stood still \u2014 everything in Tom\u2019s office looks like it\u2019s been there since the \u201870s, particularly the well-thumbed Rolodex \u2014 and the people seem like they\u2019ve been there forever as well, a funny blend of competence and cluelessness. (In the opening episode, Tom yells to his assistant to get a local restaurant on the phone. \u201cWhat\u2019s the number?\u201d is her unfrazzled reply.)<\/p>\n
O\u2019Flynn\u2019s Patricia, in particular, is a wonderful comic creation; she\u2019s got a sad-owl, wide-eyed deadpan, stomping around in her sensible flats and looking at Tom in perpetual disappointment, like she\u2019s waiting for him to say something that he\u2019s never going to say. Her moods change instantly, like she\u2019s consciously switching gears. \u201cThis place freaks me out,\u201d she says darkly to Tom, outside the haunted hotel where he\u2019s about to spend the night, then adds a cheery chirp, \u201cOK, good luck!\u201d As the series progresses, we learn more about Patricia\u2019s backstory and she becomes less funny and more poignant \u2014 and, eventually, heroic.<\/p>\n
But even as it settles decidedly on the horror side of things in the later episodes, \u201cWidow\u2019s Bay\u201d feels disjointed \u2014 a blur of ghost story, slasher movie, period thriller, \u201cJaws\u201d-like shriekfest and father-son drama, as Tom and Evan confront their family demons. A few good jump scares turn up, but nothing truly terrifying (unless Patricia\u2019s sad-sack wardrobe counts). But I won\u2019t say it\u2019s not worth watching \u2014 there\u2019s pleasure to be had in hanging with this small-town community, where the history center volunteer and the convenience store cashier and the local drug dealer (\u201cI\u2019m a shaman,\u201d he insists, rejecting the label) all have known each other for ages. It\u2019s cozy horror, and these days there\u2019s something appealing about that.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
